(5,186 posts)Perhaps we should have a funeral for the 200,000+ Iraqis and the 4,500 service members killed in his illegal war?

(113,954 posts)deceased family member at a time such as this. Funerals are for the living, after all. Not to mention, Rachel reported for many years on Cheney's culpability for the Iraq war and other offenses. She chose to be there yesterday out of due respect for Liz--someone Rachel would not have agreed with in terms of policy at all, either, but who stood up for those Capitol police and the Constitution on Jan 6 and thereafter.
As you demonstrate, many Dem/Progressives are criticized because, unlike our RW opponents, we can see shades of gray. There is a time and place for black and white thinking, but when it comes to supporting family members who had nothing to do with what made their deceased family members so offensive for so long and so many, I think a bit of empathy is not too much to expect. So, you say, what about the Trump family when their ultimate disgrace finally dies? Well, if you can tell me one thing any of that crowd did to help the American people, defend democracy and the Constitution--as Liz did--then I might agree with you. But, I'd bet the farm that you cannot. Thus, they will get nothing in defense of the horrific man that was their father, husband, or other family member-- even as he disgraces this country for the very last time. As such, I see the situations entirely differently.

(5,186 posts)I used to listen to her on the radio when that was a thing.
I will call Cheney a war criminal, though. I'm not willing to rewrite history and cover for Bush and Cheney, like so many others. The Iraq War was illegal, immoral, and those responsible will never see consequences. That is a shame.

(4,507 posts)Maybe it's gross President Biden and Jill were there? VP Harris? Al Gore?
Funerals are for the family and friends of the deceased. They deserve support and respect.

(5,186 posts)He should have died in prison. I'll save my grief for the hundreds of thousands that died in his illegal war. I hope that Haliburton money can buy a nice place in Hell.

(10,943 posts)... conservatives, all along. I think she was close with one of the big media moguls- maybe Roger Ailes? I was surprised to see learn was close with Greta Van Susteren and, I heard, other conservative TV hosts. I think she is a Cheney family friend.

Now he seems like a minor figure...compared to trump.
By withholding aid and medical care and food aid overseas as well as this country, trump may rack up a larger body count than Cheney before he takes the dirt nap.
Cheney was evil, but trump is in a league of his own.

The one most of us ARE NOT a part of.

(3,980 posts)We are considered foot soldiers. Party leaders and party-affiliated talking heads retain the freedom to rub elbows with the same people that they have a vested interest in making us hate.
The result is that the former "evolve" and "show class" while we are left to froth at the mouth and carry forward the villainy narratives.
The elite feel no obligation to mitigate nor release us from that specific hatred as it remains useful as a general tactic so, in many case, we end up with bewildered folks saying, "Wait, I thought I was supposed to hate them!"
I prefer to treat the political opposition as just that and not commit my emotional state to the cause of people who will then go glad-hand the very people they train us to hate.
