George Conway: White House officials say the boss is really stupid and you have to watch what you say to him

White House officials say the boss is really stupid and you have to watch what you say to him

https://www.politico.com/news/2025/11/10/trumps-50-year-mortgage-plan-is-getting-panned-allies-blame-this-man-00645654

-snip-

On Saturday evening, Pulte arrived at President Donald Trump’s Palm Beach Golf Club with a roughly 3-by-5 posterboard in hand. A graphic of former President Franklin Roosevelt appeared below “30-year mortgage” and one of Trump below “50-year mortgage.” The headline was “Great American Presidents.”

Roughly 10 minutes later, Trump posted the image to Truth Social, according to one of the people familiar, who was with the president at the time.

Almost immediately, aides were fielding angry phone calls from those who thought the idea – which would endorse a 50 year payback period for a mortgage – was both bad politics and bad policy, a move that could raise housing costs in the long run, the person said.

“He just sold POTUS a bill of goods that wasn’t necessarily accurate,” the person said. “He said ‘FDR did it, you can do it, it’s gonna be a big thing.’ But he didn’t tell him about all the unintended consequences.”

He wasn't "sold a bill of goods"... He snatched it and held it up for all to see.

Maybe that is the average or median time a purchased home has remained under mortgage. An artifact of how high rates were in the 80s colliding with a declining stagnant middle class. Many people may have refinanced and extended their mortgage durations.

The 50 year mortgage idea is stunningly incompetent and literally no one would take it seriously as a means for home ownership.

What will keep you up at night is the ideas that are much more dangerous and we don't know about...yet.

I couldn’t afford a 50 year mortgage. If I wait til I am in my late 20s or early 30s and by some great miracle I could afford it, I would be in my 80s. Of course I would still be working because Social Security would be long gone. Now if I do live long enough to pay it off, would I be in the Barron Trump Dynasty or the Adolph Miller one?
