Someone on our local community pages, pointed out how many restaurants in PA, our offering to to help feed those who will not be receiving their snap benefits, and hoped restaurants here would do the same.
A woman actually posted a reply that she saw it as a quote slap in the face to "working people." She went on to say that she was a single mother of two and worked three jobs to keep them fed, and a roof over their heads. That she was taught never to accept government handouts, because that's shameful. She closed by saying, "so where is my free pizza, for actually working."
Was glad to see a lot of people calling her out for being a callous, sanctimonious, and jealous jerk, and defending those in need.
I agreed with the people that posted against her and said we don't know others circumstances. I added that children are going to go hungry too,and they have no say in what their parents or the government do. So even if their parents were "lazy," like the poster claimed that's not their kids' fault so why should they have to starve? What the hell is wrong with people like her?

(234 posts)fraudulently getting some benefit, should negate hundreds or thousands being denied that same benefit. Anyone remember the same people caterwauling over those that got their PPP loans written off? Ya, I don't either, unless, of course, it was someone recognized as a Dem. Then, of course, funds for better enforcement and penalties never seem to cross their small minds. "Too expensive" seems to be the usual refrain.

(79,241 posts)I do not think she is pure evil like many we read about.
She may be amenable to reason and logic.
My opinion might not be popular, but after 40 years as a therapist,
I have a good feel for who is amenable to change and who isn't.
BlueKota
(5,021 posts)that she will change, and realize there comes a time in everyone's life where they need help and it's not shameful to ask for it. That and we shouldn't shame others who may have a legitimate need for it.

(79,241 posts)She is young, proud and independent. Which are not bad traits unless carried too far.
But there will come a day when she learns the hard way she will need some help.
And her children will have to take precedence over her pride and independence.

(6,635 posts)a lot of these people have been programmed by right decades to think like that. All the propaganda from talk radio to FAUX News has made people like that irrational and delusional. You cant reason with them. Maybe they are not evil but they are enabling evil. They need to be defeated.

(79,241 posts)They are impossible to reach.
I wouldn't waste my time on them.
But the research shows that some can be reached with truth bombs.
I think this lady might be one of those.
There are some potential cracks in her facade.

(2,894 posts)Single parent that works three jobs? When does she have time to sleep?
haele
(15,015 posts)Is it one of the those "three jobs - working 32 hours weekly at one place (like at home...), pick up the occasional Friday/Saturday Gig work when the kids are at dads or grandparents, and 5/6 hours work/volunteer at Church on Sunday?" I got a neighbor that does that.
In fact, most single moms do something similar, because employers are too cheap to give enough hours they need to offer benefits. It's tiring, just like working a full time job with a couple -4 hours required OT or an hour commute each way - and then you have to take care of the kids...and you make too much for government assistance.
And I will be the first to say, being a single mom is a full time job.
Not everyone can work that many jobs.
And...
"I was taught never to take a handout from the Government (like "those lazy slackers do)" - means either she's got support somewhere else that's not for "po'folks" or she's making too much between her jobs for support subsidies - because, frankly, CPS will take her kids if she's leaving them home alone, not being cared for working her three jobs.
BlueKota
(5,021 posts)that she does get some sort support even if it's not from the government. Even if she is a single Mom, that doesn't mean the father of her children isn't paying child support.

(12,598 posts)I worked with a rightwing low payed single mom... she bellyached "my taxes going to illegals". one day I pointed out that at her income and parent status, she probably wasn't paying much or any federal taxes... getting the child credit. She was stunned...hadn't even considered the possibility.

(4,524 posts)Maybe she wasn't Christian. I'm not, yet I still think that feeding the hungry is a moral issue.
BlueKota
(5,021 posts)it must be in name only. I hated Catholic School for the most part, but I actually kind of enjoyed listening to the gospel readings, and the hymns. Those definitely emphasized feeding and clothing the poor, and being good to not just your family and friends, but even strangers you meet along the way.
I think someone of them must have gotten their religious education through grifters like Pat Robertson, Jimmy Swaggert, Jerry Fallwell, and Jim and Tammy Faye Baker. They all made my skin crawl.

(2,173 posts)we were taught about works and how important they are. Many evangelicals are taught that works don't matter, only believing in Jesus is sufficient. Evangelicals also believe that having faith in Jesus, all your past, present, and future sins will be forgiven. I guess there's no need for Judgement Day then?

(63,758 posts)the same strict judgment could be applied to her.
She can change. Her stress level is too high to work on her own compassion instead of regurgitating philosophy she was taught by family. She needs a break and a chance to work through what is correct for now as well as what works bdst for everyone in the very long term. She needs to see the history of perpetuating harshness and the lie that all successful people pull themselves up by their bootstraps. But right now she's too busy and too tired.

(14,961 posts)And he's walking on a beach and there's two sets of footprints in the sand and he's complaining to Jesus that he ain't never got no help from Jesus from all the shit coming his way.
And Jesus tells him, I carried your ass when things were down and even so, you did nothing yourself to get your shit together.
The moral is, you gotta take care of your problems yourself. No gub'mint handouts. Just ask Jesus and an Amazon truck will bring food to your front door.

(5,538 posts)If she was able to it might have made things a little better for her kids. And if she couldn't use them, then she should just be out of the discussion. First admendent includes free association, so resturants are free to do as they want with their extra as long as they keep up on their payroll and state obligations.

(5,021 posts)called her out that she's seen women who get government assistance use it for tattoos, and getting their nails done.
So by her logic she thinks that because there are a couple of people here and there abusing the system, everyone getting aide must be. She'd rather the many get punished for the sins of a few.

(14,291 posts)I thought the caption said Party Chair. Anyway, I caught a clip of an interview the other day where he said he wouldn't be surprised if employment numbers improve after SNAP benefits discontinue during the shutdown. The GOP clearly believes that SNAP recipients are just able-bodied people gaming the system. Needless to say, of course, the approximately 604,000 Oklahomans receiving SNAP benefits are mostly the elderly, disabled and children.
