The planned trip by Usha Vance to northern Greenland has infuriated the Island. Residents of one of Earth's two largest ice caps have made themselves clear to Donald Trump once again: do not send your representatives here and bully us into agreeing to your imperialist aims.
Prime Minister Egede was neither playing nor Demark with Trump, who had threatened a military invasion of the majority Inuit population. Both countries blasted the US delegation. Telling them we will not meet with you
From USA Today:
The second lady was expected to travel to Greenland on Thursday alongside Mike Waltz, President Donald Trump's national security adviser, and Energy Secretary Chris Wright. The White House said that she would watch the island's national dogsled race and "celebrate Greenlandic culture and unity."

What Trump fails to understand is that most of the mineral wealth in Greenland is under up to two miles of ice, so it is only his ego that drives this absurd effort of annexation whose people who have made it clear for years: We are not for sale.

(4,623 posts)According to common manners, you do not invite yourself into someone else's home.
You behave like a decent human being (or government) and wait for them to invite you.
Inviting yourself is the very definition of PIGGISHNESS. Jesus would not do, as you should well know.
I unfortunately woke up thinking of these assholes today, and the one word that came to mind was crass. People with no manners, values, or appreciation of anything truly meaningful in life — not to mention no patriotism or dedication to the values this country supposedly stands for.
Boors and bullies who think they’re better than everybody else just because they’ve gotten their grubby hands on a pile of money.

(103,330 posts)Mr. Trump had previously pointed to new land expropriation laws in South Africa that he claims are racist and a breach of the White farmers' human rights. In reaction to the laws, he has halted all foreign aid to South Africa.
...
In a Friday post on his own Truth social platform, Mr. Trump once again offered "safe refuge" to Afrikaner farmers who feel unsafe in South Africa. That came after, on Feb. 7, Mr. Trump signed an executive order accusing the South African government of adopting racist laws that discriminate against Afrikaners, an ethnic group made up primarily of the descendants of Dutch settlers who started arriving in the country hundreds of years ago and now amount to about 13% of the population.
...
South Africa's government hit back at the time, saying the law pertained to unused land or land that was not serving the public interest. Mr. Trump ordered Secretary of State Marco Rubio to prioritize the resettlement program in the U.S. for Afrikaners who feel they have been the victims of racial discrimination. He also cut off all aid and assistance to South Africa for as long as the land expropriation law remains on the books.
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/trump-south-africa-farmers-white-afrikaners-offer-us-citizenship/
At a time when he's denying asylum to pretty much anyone else from anywhere in the world, that's implying South Africa is the worst of the worst. Plus of course he stopped USAID anti-HIV programs, which will kill many South Africans (and other nationalities, of course).

She clerked for John Roberts and Brett Kavanaugh. Plus she advised Kavanaugh during his confirmation proceedings. I have seen remarks like “she isn’t as bad as him”. Don’t fall for the bull. She is knee deep in MAGA hoopla. She is rich and smart which makes her decision to go to Greenland all the more reprehensible.

(1,327 posts)The only reason this is ever brought up is Greenland is a huge area so it's bound to have some. But there's a reason they're not being mined right now - it's just not economically feasible compared to getting those same minerals from much more convenient sources elsewhere. And it won't be for many, many years.

(30,728 posts)On a Mercator projection, Greenland appears roughly the same size as Africa, but in reality, Africa is about 14 times larger. The Peters projection, in contrast, aims to show landmasses in their correct relative sizes, though it distorts shapes.

Trump is NOT a strategic thinker (or a thinker of any kind, really), but it is possible that somebody spoke to him about global water scarcity at some point, and it stuck in the decrepit funhouse that is the inside of his head.

(403 posts)Neither the "first" nor the "second" ladies have any actual, elected, or appointed status with the government. They are accorded their "respect" due to the status of their husbands. This is also true of any "first or second" gentlemen.
The people of Greenland owe her nothing. They normally would be simply polite and waste valuable time, resources, and efforts to entertain and please her and put on photo-ops but nothing official.
However, due to her husband's and his "bosses" pointless, provocative, and repeated statements her visit is ill-timed and unnecessary. Imagine Jill Biden or Michelle Obama engaging in such petty gestures? How would the "republicans" react?
It would be interesting to know what is in Usha Vance's mind. Does she think she has some official status or power? Does she think as her husband and the current administration do, that she is some kind of princess to her husband's prince?
Overreach is very common among this generation of "elite" conservative republican politicians. They truly seem to believe their elected status, appointed status, or accidental status means they are "official" leaders over the people who elected them for life.
They do not deserve an once of respect

(777 posts)And America remains NATO.
If Russia wants to talk with Greenland, it can send its own reps under its own blood-soaked flag.
Greenland is such a strategic place, and a place not particularly suited for a large population, and since it belongs to Denmark, a NATO nation, would it make sense for Greenland to join NATO as a shared possession of NATO, not of any single country? Inhabitants of Greenland would become employees of NATO and be paid for that work, kind of like the payment Alaskans earn as dividends on Alaskan oil. They would also continue to pursue their own interests. This status would also make Greenland of greater strategic importance while placing it under the NATO umbrella. And, no country would attempt a land grab as the US is doing.
