A second family member works for NCI (National Cancer Institute) part of NIH.

They work at an affiliated cancer research site.

Today they are scrambling to get on the federal portal to see if they can get enough
money for funding to cover expenses for next month.

Some of the cancer studies they work on are longitudinal. This means a group of people
has been studied for years. All the data could be lost. Years and years of research down
the drain.

Unfortunately, when accompanied by intense ignorance among the electorate, we are all doomed.

I've been in their shoes with funded work-- but fortunately during times of administrative sanity--even if under R's in the White House. Still, we all (or at least a lot of us) remember the time of Newt Gingrich. This is exponentially worse right now, but that crowd planted the seeds.
