"SNIP...........
Medicaid reimbursement portals were down Tuesday in all 50 states on the heels of a funding freeze ordered by the Trump administration of federal grants and loans, CNBC reports.

(34,970 posts)The billionaires have decided that they are fine with using religion not only to win elections, but to turn back time and really make themselves some $$$. They were all in front row seats on election day. I don't think they believe most of the BS that is being shoveled, but they sure are going to profit from it. They are going to let the Heritage Foundation et al turn this country into their dystopian Christian wonderland. They don't need no hospitals, research, education, etc. "God will provide" is their mantra. They are stark-raving lunatics, bent on profit/control.

(34,970 posts)Heritage Foundation are behind this. Let me be crystal clear: the Republican Party owns this. We read Project 2025 before the election, and the Heritage Foundation was very proud of their handywork. They were so arrogant that they published it on their website and started recruiting. That's how they were able to roll it out so quickly. This is not just Trump and a few silly followers.

(48,218 posts)Is it part of legislation funding the government? Why would Congress authorize the president to stop spending when spending must originate in the Congress?

(1,141 posts)The Supreme Court a while ago said the president doesn't have the authority to stop spending legislated by Congress, but Trump is trying with these actions to get a new case before the current ultra-conservative SC so they can reverse that and say he does have this power.

(19,149 posts)My husband's brother died in March 2023, and my sister died in January 2024. They were both living in nursing homes, funded by Medicare/Medicaid. I'm glad they didn't live to see (and be affected by) what's happening now.

(34,970 posts)I'm glad my mom doesn't have to see this. We were fortunate to have some land to sell and then Medicare to pay for her nursing care. She was in a very caring facility. Others are not going to be so lucky.

(6,623 posts)The Change cyber attack last year was a big blow for many health care providers, hospitals, and pharmacies. Many small clinics, independent providers are not able to sustain these financial attacks. After the cyber attacks, people were taking out loans to make payroll, pay rent and other business expenses.

(1,065 posts)I became disabled in my 50's. Medical bills and a divorce left me penniless. Now at age 73 I get by on a tiny SS check and a housing voucher. My healthcare is (was?) covered by Medicaid/Medicare. I am supposed to have cataract surgery in February since I'm all but blind in one eye. Without Medicaid I may very well go completely blind and I won't have the money to cover the cost of my prescriptions.
Trump is trying to become a mass murderer.

(6,641 posts)I discussed this last week with my Primary Care Physician about my possible dying in the near future. She said the medical community is working on this because there are hundreds of patients in the same boat that we are in. Horrible situation! They have been told they need to find "creative solutions" and working on finding "out of the box" plans. Financing is a major problem, no surprise there.

(1,815 posts)And by the way, approximately 20,524,000 people are enrolled in Marketplace ACA plans. Oh, and according to the CMS, approximately 68 million people are enrolled in Medicare.
That's a total of 167,832,002 people who have health insurance provided or subsidized by the federal government, or approximately half of the entire U.S. population.
Are Trump & Co. going to try to shut this all down?

(3,099 posts)White House says Medicaid portal will be back online shortly after Trump funding freeze blamed
But the White House later said it expected the systems to be back online shortly without any effect on payments.
White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt later wrote in a tweet, The White House is aware of the Medicaid website portal outage.
We have confirmed no payments have been affected they are still being processed and sent, Leavitt said. We expect the portal will be back online shortly.
I honestly think this was incompetence more than anything. Social Security and Medicare were explicitly exempted from the funding freeze. My bet is nobody in the Trump administration even considered the impact on Medicaid until people like Senator Wyden screamed about it, then they realized it was a PR disaster and quickly reversed course.

Its against this backdrop that the White House is apparently halting domestic grants, too. NBC News reported:
President Donald Trump has ordered a freeze to domestic and foreign federal aid in a sweeping effort to stop government funding for causes that dont fit with his agenda. A memo sent out Monday night from Matthew J. Vaeth, acting director of the White House Office of Management and Budget, said the changes would go into effect Tuesday at 5 p.m. ET and relate to a string of executive orders Trump has signed since taking office last week.
The existence of the memo was first reported by Marisa Kabas, a New York-based journalist who published the document on Bluesky......
It is not a secret that Trump and his team, after running on an authoritarian-style campaign platform, want to wrestle control over the power of the purse, shifting authority from Congress to the White House, despite the framework of our constitutional system of government. Its precisely why theres been so much discussion of late about the Impoundment Control Act.
Were now starting to see what those ambitions look like when pursued as a matter of government policy.,,,
Whats more, Schumers statement, referring to administration officials, added, They say this is only temporary, but no one should believe that.
As for the potential political impact, a Politico report noted that in the coming days, were going to discover the full range of programs, projects and initiatives whose funds have suddenly been blocked. And given the sweeping scale of the order, it seems unlikely these will all be glowingly liberal, woke-tastic DEI projects in coastal America. This order is going to affect communities the length and breadth of the country.
Be careful what you wish for, Mr. President.
