President Donald Trump's sweeping executive order freezing federal loans and grants has put a number of key government programs in jeopardy, and none may be bigger than Medicaid, which provides health insurance to more than 70 million Americans.
Sen. Ron Wyden (R-OR), writing on BlueSky, revealed that "my staff has confirmed reports that Medicaid portals are down in all 50 states following last night's federal funding freeze."
Wyden added that "this is a blatant attempt to rip away health care from millions of Americans overnight and will get people killed."
Wyden wasn't the only Democratic senator to confirm that Medicaid had been shut down nationwide, as Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) also reported it down in his state.

(8,457 posts)WASHINGTON, Jan 28 (Reuters) - At least three U.S. lawmakers said on Tuesday healthcare providers were blocked from the Medicaid payment portal after the Trump administration announced a federal funding pause, even as the White House said the program was exempted.
Mandatory programs like the joint federal-state health insurance program for the poor and the SNAP food assistance program were excluded from the U.S. funding pause, the White House's Office of Management and Budget told lawmakers in a letter.

(16,997 posts)A wide range of organizations and agencies that depend on federal health department funds say they have been locked out of the online system responsible for tracking and depositing their money, in the wake of the White House's move to freeze funding across the Trump administration.
These include state Medicaid programs which have been unable to log into the Payment Management Services web portal, or PMS, run by the Department of Health and Human Services, which handles billions of dollars of payments every year.

Missouri Republican Sen. Josh Hawley said he was assured Medicaid would not be affected.
"What the White House has told us just now is that Medicaid is not, categorically not, covered by this," Hawley said. "In other words, there will be no interruption to Medicaid or Medicare or any grant that floats to individuals."
