We still have a constitution. We still have representative government.
It is OUR JOB as citizens to push our congresspeople to take this remedy against an unlawful president.
I know that a lot of you are absolute experts at pouring cold water on anyone who makes a suggestion. Maybe this time you could hold your tongue or even go along with it anyway. How can it hurt?
I do not believe that all Republican citizens are blind to what is happening.
I do not believe that all Republican elected officials are happy with what Trump is doing.
We need to start something.

(13,456 posts)he wants legal or not. We would never get 67 votes in the Senate to convict. And if a couple of House Republicans went along and he were impeached he would just use that to rally more support from his cult.
Think. Again.
(20,749 posts)...is that an unconstitutiinal act can not be considered an official act.
Moving to impeach can have benefits over and above a conviction.

(8,677 posts)Block (1:45) SPECIAL COMMENT: To repeat myself - because Im RIGHT - File motions to impeach Trump NOW.
Move to impeach Trump today, AND KEEP MOVING to impeach Trump every day through next years midterms. Impeachment is UNDEFEATED. UNDEFEATED in American history. House Democrats: he handed you TWELVE, maybe FIFTEEN new counts on Friday night alone. Blatantly, brazenly illegal dismissals of Departmental Inspector Generals, just as Project 2025 promised, and the School Safety Board. Elimination of oversight. Elimination of legal protections against the mass murder of children. In the old days you mightve arrested Trump. Now you are limited to impeachment bills that will all fail EXCEPT THEY WILL ULTIMATELY SUCCEED.
Impeach him for the Friday Night massacre. Impeach him for circumventing the 14th Amendment. He just ramped up the migrant arrest quota to 1500 a day and started raids in Chicago yesterday: Impeach him for violating the 4th Amendment. And if I hear one more piece of blowback to my PREVIOUS call to impeach him no matter the outcome, one more head-shake from a cowardly Democrat, and especially one more factually inaccurate claim that it doesnt work, one more self-absorbed loser saying Impeach? Yeah, sounds good. How did it work out for us last time?
Pretty effing well, actually. The mere TALK of impeaching Trump helped the Democrats win the House in 2018 and break Trump tri-partite control of government. The FIRST impeachment was followed by keeping the house in 2020 and after the Georgia election, taking the senate in 2020, and oh by the way the White House in 2020. The SECOND impeachment crushed any lingering attempt by Trump to overthrow the Biden Government-In-Waiting in 2021 and provided the impetus for the January 6th prosecutions.
In fact, since Nixon, every party that impeached or TRIED to impeach a president won the next elections. House, Senate, White House. Thirteen straight.
IMPEACHMENT EVEN FAILED IMPEACHMENT - IS UNDEFEATED.

1. Violations of the Emoluments Clause
The Constitution contains two clauses known as the Emoluments Clauses that prohibit a president from profiting from the United States, individual states, or foreign governments (U.S. Constitution, Article I, Section 9, Clause 8; and Article II, Section 1, Clause 7). The Founders understood them to provide a critical safeguard against corruption, particularly corruption of the executive by foreign powers. As Alexander Hamilton explained, the Foreign Emoluments Clause ensures that foreign powers can neither weaken his fortitude by operating on his necessities, nor corrupt his integrity by appealing to his avarice. The Federalist No. 73.
Trump has refused to sell his ownership stake in companies through which he is assured to receive substantial payments from foreign governments in violation of the Foreign Emoluments Clause. At least five foreign governments pay a combined $2 million per month in fees for their units in Trump World Tower; and because all five of these foreign governments are currently paying Trump these monthly fees, Trump is in violation of the Foreign Emoluments Clause from the moment he took the oath of office.
Congress must open an immediate impeachment investigation based on these grounds.
Congress must also be prepared to expand its impeachment investigation if Trump receives any additional unlawful domestic or foreign emoluments via any of his business holdings, which includes: numerous real estate holdings, including golf resorts that have repeatedly hosted a golf league backed by the Saudi Arabian government; the Trump Media & Technology Group, which owns Truth Social; and World Liberty Financial, a cryptocurrency project that will funnel 75% of its net profits directly to Trump.
2. Unlawful, unconstitutional, and corrupt conduct during the 2024 presidential campaign
Congresss impeachment investigation must also examine unlawful, unconstitutional, or corrupt practices that occurred during Trumps re-election campaign, which include:
Violating campaign finance laws by offering benefits in exchange for campaign contributions, including (1) by offering tax and regulatory favors to oil and gas executives if they provide r $1 billion in contributions; (2) concealing legal services payments by his campaign and related super PACs; (3) unlawfully coordinating with super PACs that supported his candidacy, including those financed by billionaires he later appointed to key administrative positions; and (4) facilitating and accepting unlawful campaign contributions from Elon Musk via X and via Musks million-dollar lottery scheme that paid out prizes only to individuals who would publicly support Trump.
Using racist, xenophobic rhetoric, including by referring to immigrants in Aurora, Colorado as blood thirty criminals from whom voters have to be rescued; repeating false claims about Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, even after such claims led to bomb threats and other threats of violence; and referring to immigrants as committing horrendous crimes because of their genes.
Threatening physical violence, including murder, against political opponents, a U.S. military commander, journalists, and protesters; and
Spreading dangerous disinformation about U.S. hurricane disaster response.
3. Pardoning and Blocking the Prosecution of Fellow Insurrectionists
Congresss impeachment investigation must include Trumps abuse of the pardon power and his efforts to undermine the independence of the US Department of Justice in order to protect the January 6 insurrectionistsincluding himself. Trump himself engaged in insurrection on January 6, 2021, inciting hundreds of violent insurrectionists to storm the Capitol in order to try to overturn an election that he lost. His co-insurrectionists seized control of the Capitol, disrupted the peaceful transfer of power, assaulted law enforcement and journalists, vandalized the Capitol and individual congressional offices, and threatened the lives and safety of our elected officials and law enforcement. In the intervening years, more than one thousand insurrectionists have been held legally accountable for their actions. Many pleaded guilty to misdemeanor and felony convictions, while others were found guilty after trial by a jury of their peers.
But Trump has now granted complete and unconditional pardons or sentence commutations of all of them, including those who were convicted of assaulting law enforcement, as well as the leaders of the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers imprisoned for seditious conspiracy. He also has ordered the Department of Justice to drop cases against all remaining January 6 defendants. Trump has intentionally blocked our countrys efforts to hold his fellow insurrectionists accountable for their actions, and, in so doing, he protects himself from either further examination or further repercussions of his own role in the insurrection. In the face of a president abusing his power, as he has done here, Congress has a responsibility to follow the mandate of Article II, Section 4 (the Impeachment Clause) of the US Constitution and initiate an impeachment inquiry.

(39,260 posts)There are none. None.
There is this from Google AI, then Wikipedia:
"C.F.R. 6 § 110.121 Security clearances and access to classified information" is a part of US law, specifically within the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), stating that no person can access classified information without a security clearance; essentially outlining the legal requirement for obtaining a security clearance to access classified information.
Here's the regulatory law, which is not a U.S.C. statute:

Courts can rule, yes; but they're not equipped to enforce the rulings, except to issue fines, arrest warrants, jail time, wage garnishment, liens on assets, court-ordered community service, or other sanctions to force "compliance." But enforce their rulings or the law themselves? No.
And now there won't be a good faith DOJ and its FBI to enforce the law, either, since both exist within the executive branch. Which might be why so many believe that democracy's rule of law has been broken.

(1,498 posts)Everything starts with advocacy. Often that means advocacy for things that seem impossible - Abolition, Women's Suffrage, for example.
"It's not realistic" is an excuse for complacency, compromise, and complicity.
The mantra from many Democratic party politicians post Reagan has always been "elect us and then we will take firm stands on all of those issues you are about." No. It works the other way around: take a stand and then people will vote for you. That is being practical and realistic. If you are serious about being focused on winning the House and Senate in 2026, that is.

(29,449 posts)Advocating for an impeachment that is not possible to bring about at this time is precisely equivalent to thoughts and prayers.
OH BOY! Lets gather up all our energy and resources around a third impeachment because THE FIRST TWO DID SO MUCH GOOD.
Cirsium
(1,498 posts)I made a strong case, and you haven't addressed it at all. You just cavalierly dismissed it out of hand. This is nothing like "thoughts and prayers."
As I said, people were advocating for Abolition when it was "not possible to bring about at this time."
It doesn't take up any "energy and resources." Open mouth. Speak. We are all going to be doing that anyway. Instead of opening your mouth and lecturing people about what can't be done, how about when you open your moth tell people what should be done? It won't take any more energy or resources.
Advocating for impeachment, like advocating for Abolition, are calls to action and are intended to start the discussion.
"Thoughts and prayers" is a call for inaction, and is intended to end the discussion.
See the difference?

(29,449 posts)It's the definition of insanity and all that. You are advocating that we continue to do more of exactly what we have been doing. (10,461 posts)Someone should declare their candidacy for President and start holding rallies bashing Trump 24-7 for the next four years. I would contribute money to support that, and so would many, many people. Just to hear someone publicly bash that slob on a regular, public basis.
If the Networks refuse to show clips of the rallies, we could sue them given they put Trump on all the time for the four years of the Biden administration. The lawsuits themselves would make the news and draw attention to the resistance.
I just want to feel like we are being aggressively resistant to this coup. It would be empowering.

They have myriad right-wing think tanks (including the Heritage Foundation), they have the Federalist Society (including Leonard Leo helping them get control of SCOTUS), they dominate talk radio, they dominate social media (via X, Meta, etc.), they own the corporate news media, they have the billionaire class funding them (including Elon Musk, the richest person in the world), they have an army of lawyers helping them implement voter suppression and gerrymandering, and so on.

(866 posts)After the 2020 election, our democracy was hanging by a thread.
We were lucky beyond belief that we defeated Trump. He almost succeeded with his coup.
Then there were the sequence of failures and betrayals to hold Trump accountable that have been endlessly rehashed here at DU.
Even as those things were happening in real time, we could see what should have been done but were utterly powerless to do anything about it.
I'll be honest. I'll never understand Washington politicians (both Democrats and Republicans) or how things actually work in that world.
But as for our situation now, I don't see any plausible way out.
Republicans have amassed too much power.
And they're going for the kill.

And we need to get rid of this "weak" perception that the Right has of us. They need to know that if they come goosestepping down the street with their big bad guns to educate us "liberals" they will get the same or worse right back at them.
They will think twice with that threat in the back of their empty heads.
