The Times UK - Denmark seeks alliance on Greenland to counter US threat
France and Germany have suggested sending European troops to join US forces on the Arctic island coveted by Trump
Bruno Waterfield, Brussels
Tuesday January 28 2025, 2.10pm GMT, The Times
Denmark is building a European alliance to cement its control of Greenland in the face of threats from President Trump ahead of a Brussels security summit next week that will include Sir Keir Starmer.
Mette Frederiksen, the Danish prime minister, embarked on a rapid tour of European capitals on Tuesday, starting in Berlin with the German chancellor, Olaf Scholz, before talks with President Macron in Paris.
She will finish in Brussels for a meeting with Mark Rutte, the Nato secretary-general, who will join European Union leaders and the British prime minister for a summit on defence and security next Monday.
Top of the agenda will be dealing with Trump, who has not ruled out using military force or economic coercion, such as tariffs, to take Greenland from Denmark, in comments which have alarmed many in Europe.
We have faced great trials before. European co-operation has proven its worth in dealing with a number of crises in recent years, Frederiksen said on Tuesday, standing alongside Scholz, although she did not make any direct reference to Greenland. We are facing a more uncertain reality, a reality that calls for an even more united Europe and for more co-operation.

(107,530 posts)6. I had a dream early this morning that the draft was being brought back...
and they had set a really advanced age limit that would likely pull in quite a few of us who could never imagine such a thing. Never say never anymore, but I cannot imagine fighting against our former allies. Unfathomable. Maybe Greenland/Denmark would take some of US? Geebus--my dreams are surpassed only by current news in the
"OMG" factor...
