BERLIN (AP) — Denmark’s prime minister embarked on a tour of major European capitals Tuesday as the continent faces what she called “a more uncertain reality” and her country moves to strengthen its military presence around Greenland.

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen planned stops in Berlin, Paris and Brussels, the latter to meet NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. Her trip comes as new U.S. President Donald Trump has said he would not rule out the use of military force to seize control of Greenland, an autonomous territory belonging to NATO and European Union member Denmark.

On Monday evening, her government announced a roughly 14.6 billion-kroner (nearly $2 billion) agreement with parties including the governments of Greenland and the Faeroe Islands to “improve capabilities for surveillance and maintaining sovereignty in the region” ...

Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Tuesday reaffirmed Germany’s support for neighboring Denmark in its ongoing dispute with US President Donald Trump over Greenland.

At a joint press conference in Berlin with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Scholz emphasized the fundamental importance of European states' territorial integrity.

“The inviolability of borders is a fundamental principle of international law. Russia has broken this principle with its invasion of Ukraine, thereby also laying the axe to the peace order in Europe,” Scholz said ...

PARIS — France has discussed with Denmark sending troops to Greenland in response to United States President Donald Trump's repeated threats to annex the Danish territory, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said.

Barrot said in an interview with France's Sud Radio that France "started discussing [troop deployment] with Denmark," but that it was not "Denmark's wish" to proceed with the idea.

Barrot's comments came as Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was in the middle of a lightning tour of European capitals to drum up support from allies in dealing with Trump ...

European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said Monday that Europe is “not negotiating” with the United States over control of Greenland, as President Trump continues to insist that acquiring the self-governing territory of Denmark is necessary for American national security.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) joined with a Danish lawmaker on Monday to push back against President Trump’s continued insistence that U.S. control of Greenland is necessary for American national security.

Murkowski, who has publicly disagreed with Trump in the past, and Aaja Chemnitz, who represents Greenland in Danish Parliament, said in the joint statement that Americans should work to view Greenland as a partner, not as a potential asset ...

8. Pact says Britain has first dibs on Greenland

Saturday January 25 2025, 10.00pm GMT, The Sunday Times
Were Denmark to sell Greenland it would have to give Britain first refusal under the terms of an agreement made more than a century ago, the last Danish minister for the Arctic island has said.

Donald Trump’s stated ambition to acquire Greenland has sparked an increasingly bitter war of words. Tom Høyem, 83, Copenhagen’s representative on the island from 1982 to 1987 and an expert on its tangled history, said on Saturday that an undertaking from 1917, when America first made a tentative attempt to acquire the island, was still valid ...

“If Trump tried to buy Greenland, he would have to ask London first,” he said. “The United Kingdom demanded in 1917 that if Greenland were to be sold then the UK should have the first right to buy it.”

This was because Canada, which at the time was a British dominion, lies a few miles from Greenland across the Nares strait and, since 2022, shares a land border ...

10. The US exports $5 to $6 billion of goods to Denmark annually.

Products include tin, cotton, silk, fertilizers, and plastics. Denmark needs to start finding other countries to supply these items, just as China helped fund the production if soybeans in other countries during Trump’s first term. US soybean farmers lost billions, though Trump sent billions in welfare checks to farmers, most big agribusinesses.
