NYT: Lake-Effect Storm to Bring Several Feet of Snow to Great Lakes (Gift link)

NYT - Lake-Effect Storm to Bring Several Feet of Snow to Great Lakes

Forecasters said driving would be extremely dangerous or impossible in parts of the region as the snow forced the closure of the Erie, Pa., airport on Friday.

A lake-effect storm in the Great Lakes region was expected to bring several feet of snow in areas of Michigan, Northern New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania through the weekend, disrupting travel after the Thanksgiving holiday.

The storm, which began earlier in the week, had already brought more than eight inches of snow to portions of Marquette County in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula by Friday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

Watertown, N.Y., where less than an inch of snow had fallen on Friday afternoon, was forecast to receive up to five feet over the next three days.

The Weather Service warned of extreme impacts from the lake-effect storm through Monday morning in areas of Northern New York east of Lake Ontario, as well as portions of Ohio and Pennsylvania along the Lake Erie shore.

The severity of the storm could make driving extremely dangerous or impossible in parts of those regions.

Lake-effect storms occur when cold air moves across a large body of warmer water. They typically happen in late fall and early winter.

Poof! No more storms of any kind. Kind of like using a Sharpie!

And you can nuke a hurricane when no one knows about it!

See how convenient?

Currently it’s snowing heavily just a few miles south of the city where they could get up to 4 ft or more. The snow band is supposed to move north tomorrow and dump up to 2 ft on the south side of the city, where I live. Often when they say 2 ft, we can plan on more than that because these lake effect events are actually difficult to predict in terms of accurate amounts. All we can do is prepare for the worst which means to make sure the snowblower is ready to go and our pantries are stocked. Us old timers are used to this, we don’t like it, but it is what it is. Getting rid of the NWS is fucking crazy. On the bright side, the local ski areas could get a nice jump on the season, since the last couple seasons have been terrible. The Bills are playing Sunday night in a stadium which is in ground zero of the heaviest amounts…looks dicey for the game to go on. Yikes, here we go again.
