My dad was really good at this. I lack these skills.

I raise this because one thing I've noticed about people who support Trump is that they tend to lead with anger. Often, conversations they start don't begin like ordinary conversations. I've found there's a lot of aggression and assumptions. They sort of come at you almost as if they anticipate confrontation.

I want to learn some techniques to neutralize this; techniques that are positive, maybe humorous, to sort of de-escalate and move the conversation back to a starting place that is more civilized and less antagonistic.

check yourself whenever you feel a "unfriend me if you xyz" kind of sentiment

It won’t stop what is coming like a ton of bricks sadly. For me the best way is to avoid those situations and sometimes just ignore it if anybody tries to start an argument in person. You definitely can protect your own health by doing that at least.
