Probably the best example of social media elevating the status of the ego can be found in the social media influencer. They get a dopamine high from every little subscriber and like. I’ve met a few and they act like they are movie stars when in fact they are nobodies who gamed an algorithmic system.

Being old, I was unaware of the existence of the profession (?) of "influencer" until quite recently. Apparently you get to be one by standing in your kitchen or living room or bathroom (maybe you can add a stock background of the French Riviera or an Alpine ski resort so you look rich) and, using your iPhone to create a video, hawking a product or a method or... something, and if you get enough followers you get money somehow? These creatures seem mostly to be young women who use the word "like" as an interjection and have puffy lips and weird eyebrows.

I don't get it.

From to cooking to DIY home renovations and whatever else I am interested in at the moment.

I am going to attempt building a temporary wall in my office space. I follow a guy on you tube that has millions of viewers for his DIY home projects. I have spent the last 2 weeks watching his videos and my confidence has grown that I can do it. LOL. Yes, he has influenced me to build this wall.

Influencers, are just the new way of marketing. Whether it's products, hobbies and even political ideas.

The thing is, when it comes to politics, democrats arrived late in the game to make a difference. RWers had already spent years developing their army of influencers.

Democrats are behind. We need to catch up.

Nothing wrong with following someone who you can learn from. But it seems like a lot of the young "influencers" don't really have an area of expertise. They just have followers.

RWers are professional liars as far as I am concerned. I don't think we should aspire to be like them in any way.

people that have a huge following. Just like with traditional advertising. Companies will want to pay for advertising during shows that have high ratings.
Just like people watch stupid reality shows, some people follow people on social media doing whatever stupid thing. Back in the day, I could never understand how people watched stupid shows like " Jackass", but it had huge ratings. Same concept on social media.

Influencers are paid not just by the platform. Youtube, for example, pays for video clicks , and Influencers are also being sponsored by various companies to influence their huge audience to buy a particular product or use a particular service.
I follow furniture painting videos, the videos may have sponsored product placement. So while sanding a table, the name of the sander being used will be mentioned, they will talk about the wonders of this particular sander, that will influence watchers to go buy that particular sander.

The thing is, some people don't realize that they are being marketed to, or being " influenced". Some people talk about the ethics of this, I don't mind people being sponsored as long as they tell you they are being sponsored. It's up to you to make the decision to use this product or service.

You don't have to be a liar to be a good marketer. You do have to be able to engage and build a following.
Technology will continue to change the way we do things in many ways. Some of it will be ethical, some not.
Democrats cannot afford to lose more ground in this area. It can be done without lying.

This description, sums up what democrats need to understand. - Social media influencer - is not necessarily a negative. Like all things, it can be used positively or negatively. You can positively engage and interact with your following or not.

Social media influencers have become a powerful force in the world of marketing and brand promotion. With the right collaborations, you can reach your target audience, build brand trust and credibility, and drive engagement.

Democrats were badly outflanked online in the election, and progressive influencers are now trying to create networks to be a left-wing answer to Turning Point USA.

and everyone in between with respect--if not understanding--the one thing that sends me headed for the "contemptuous" attitude toward Gen Z (and perhaps others) is their addiction to these grifting know-nothing "influencers." Uggh. Is there any hope they will break with these idiots?

When a pregnant woman went missing last year, the TikTok influencers (mostly psychics) went nuts. Drove me nuts!

They all seemed to have that Kim Kardashian demeanor.

I also think of people that are promoting a bunch of crap that I don’t really need which is too expensive lol. Although I have been approached by people on some to be a promoter of their products at times I have never investigated that…. mostly due to my cats so for pet products. If I did that, I’m not sure if that would make me an influencer or not. I think mostly I have a negative view of that word. It doesn’t always have to be negative.
