The MAGA mass deportations have a major
vulnerability. That is in order to deport people to a country, let's say Mexico, it requires that Mexico is amenable to receiving the deportees. It has happened many times over the years where a country refuses to accept a deportee. So if Mexico wishes to demonstrate that it is not a lap dog then it can take several measures all of which I endorse wholeheartedly.
First Mexico can close it's airspace to flights carrying deportees. That should prevent a "dump and run" scenario by way of airports. Second would be denial of docking for any ships in a similar vein as aircraft. Third would be to close the border crossings to all incoming people other than Mexican nationals, essential personnel and trucks.
Each of these measures is sure to be met with an outraged reaction. It would be at that point that Mexico should tell the US/MAGA lunatics that truck traffic will be allowed to flow for import/export but it is not unconditional and it will be halted if the US persists in trying to use Mexico as a dumping ground for deportees. The outrage will build of course and that is when Mexico should play the ultimate move. It should inform the US that there will be no passage allowed to the US of Mexican nationals on work visas etc. For example the workers in agriculture that America depends on to do the work and do it for cheap wages in order to keep prices low will not be coming this year. Maybe next year too. Workers in construction won't be coming either.
The question is whether Mexico would sell out for money from Washington or quake in their shoes at the idea of a confrontation with the US military on the border. Either way if someone says Mexico has no options but to take these deportees they are wrong. They have choices the question is do they have the political and moral will to make the ones that have them stand up straight or do they make the ones that keep Mexico subservient to the US?
For those who think that international neighbors don't use restriction of ingress/egress as "tools" regarding disputes with each other they are quite wrong. The US and Canada have had spats over the years and I can assure you that the flow of things at the border crossings and major bridges like the Peace Bridge, Ambassador Bridge and the Blue Water Bridge changes and not for the better. The selection for inspection of incoming trucks to Canada can go way up and that takes time and creates backed up trucks on the US side. Usually once industry on either side puts on enough pressure people get together and decide that maple leaves and bald eagles really can get along.
Without putting it all in formal written treaties it amounts to we in the US will stop pointing out that Labatt Blue is more like dishwater than beer and that poutine is the most disgusting thing ever put on a plate as long as the Canadians refrain from pointing out that we in the US let our citizens get sicker and die because we don't give everybody health care. Then everybody goes on their merry way.
