Thought the war, Russia has been threatening to escalate war beyond the borders of Ukraine if Kyiv/NATO crossed [whatever] red lines they demanded..

When the president authorized the use of long range missiles to Russian territory, he took the decision knowing the Russians would wait out just about any military action until their man was in the White House.

He also took off the table, strikes against the US embassy within Ukraine.

I think this is an indication about how strongly Russia was warning against longer range missile strikes within their territory. One response would be that in bringing in North Korean solders, Russia was also grossing red lines.

NATO does not want Putin to succeed, and they look ready to take in Ukraine soonest.
