No matter how much you like Bluesky, please continue posting on DU.

Years ago, when Facebook took off, I watched it take traffic away from a lot of good message boards.

I know people are thrilled to have what might become the most successful non-RW alternative to Twitter. It might seem especially fascinating if you never used Twitter in the old days, pre-Musk. Lots of interesting posts there. Lots of beautiful photos (real photos, not the AI slop now burying Facebook). Just the Discover page can tempt you to scroll endlessly.

https://bsky.app/

But if you spend enough time there to cut deeply into the time you spend here, it will hurt DU.

Which has been here for more than 20 years, and which we want to continue.

At this point it's impossible to know how long Bluesky will be around, or who will maintain control of it. Questions have been raised about some of the money behind it, and the people behind that money.

So be aware in particular that even your private messages there might be (or become) accessible to people who aren't on our side.

Enjoy it for what it is - a platform more relaxing and fun than Musk's Twitter. But not yet as dependable, safe and secure as DU is for liberals.

a blue dot will appear on the Up arrow to the left of the posts when there are new posts at the top of the feed that you haven't seen yet as you scrolled down. Click that arrow to go to the top and see the new posts there.

Of course with the Discover feed, the assorted posts being shown aren't in chronological order (they're an assortment of recent posts Bluesky thinks you'll find interesting and will include some posts from accounts you follow, like Twitter's For You feed). ,Posts are in chronological order with the Following feed, which has the most recent posts and reposts from the accounts you're following at the top, added to the feed as soon as they post.

All those smug people dislocating their shoulders from patting themselves on the back for leaving the "bad" site for the "good".

The smugness is insufferable. A lot less of that here. Also the censoriousness is off the charts as well.

BUT I will be happy when X dies because I want Musk to fail completely.

Facebook is, in design, similar to the DU. BluSky, Twitter, Instagram, etc. are more like chat programs, similar to Skype, but with more ability to post images and videos. It is more 'instant gratification' than the 'bulletin board'-style thing we have here.

I have seen what Twitter and other such apps did to a few of the students at my school. To see such fragile egos on display was very disheartening. And, they would not listen when I tried to explain that these people are not their friends, and they would turn and devour the student in a second if it meant being accepted into the 'in' clique. Then, it would invariably happen.

I myself don't see the appeal. (And, I was an entertainer. )

I may not post all the time, but it is the place I come first thing in the morning and last thing at night.

BlueSky is where I trash talk about General Hospital, because that is fun and escapist.

There are a lot of journalists from the UK and Canada not much from here but we in the US only have script readers. Do a search in the search bar above Getting Started for App Version 1.94 if you don't see it they rolled out some new features today.

BlueSky allows many public figures, including elected Dems and good journalists, such as Jen Rubin of WaPo, to identify themselves and post messages directly to us. Love both sites.
