$500,000 Pay, Easy Hours: How Dermatology Became the 'It' Job in Medicine

Four-day workweeks, double the salary of some colleagues and no emails at night. If those perks sound like they belong to a few vaunted tech jobs, think again. Dermatologists boast some of medicine’s most enviable work lives, and more aspiring doctors are vying for residency spots in the specialty.

“It’s ungodly competitive,” says Dr. Lindsey Zubritsky, a dermatologist in Ocean Springs, Miss., who finished her residency in 2018 and now splits her time between clinical work with patients and her social-media feed, where the “dermfluencer” has three million followers on TikTok and Instagram.

Medical residency applications for dermatology slots are up 50% over the past five years, according to data from the Association of American Medical Colleges, with women flooding the zone. A younger generation of physicians wants better work-life balance than their predecessors and, unlike pressure-cooker medical specialties such as cardiac surgery, dermatology fits the bill.

Super competitive, great hours, no call, and they make a ton of money. I'm honestly surprised the average isn't higher than 500k

I think she's doing really well....especially now that she's no longer married to the loser who is the father of her two kids.

that surgeons know nothing but do everything, internists know everything but do nothing, but that pathologists know everything and do everything, but by then it’s too late.

He particularly loves his side consultation gig in telehealth where sits at home looking at pictures and slides. He gets paid for every case, and he can do 20+ cases in an hour. He's like, "I basically just paid my mortgage while watching Downton Abbey"

I'm only half-joking. All one has to do is peruse YouTube, where videos of pimple-popping get millions of viewers, to see what a big deal that is. And, look how many dermatologists have their own TLC cable show, not just Dr. Pimple Popper.

Keep healthcare strictly for profit while offering no other alternatives and things are going to get MUCH worse.

With baking sunny spells lasting six weeks or more, it's a wonder that the capital of Arizona hasn't been moved to Melanoma.

The benefits outweigh the risks. Sunlight even has anti-inflammatory properties. You don't get that by taking vit d pills.
