Ultimately, didn't matter. States like Pennsylvania and Michigan shifted back to Trump.
Democrats also did way worse among the union vote than they have in previous elections.

I read on another forum that Kamala Harris didn't perform any worse with union members, but I've been looking and I haven't found any data showing whether union members shifted to Trump or support remained the same as before.

(1,667 posts)Nationally, Biden won the union vote 56-40 over Trump in 2020. Harris won it by 53-45. So, she did three-points worse than Biden and Trump did five-points better than he did in 2020. That's a swing of eight-points.

(2,413 posts)And I think there were some steel tariffs in place even before Trump. The argument was that they were needed on national security grounds, which at least is a good reason. Some of Trump's tariffs were really ill-advised, particularly those on agricultural products.

(9,605 posts)Biden's entire legislative agenda has been getting manufacturers to build their EV plants, solar plants, wind turbine plants and supporting industries for those here in the USA. In addition to that, I'm sure we all remember the semiconductor chips shortage during the pandemic so he passed the CHIPS Act to get manufacturing of chips in the USA. His tariffs were targeted at building those domestic industries and then protecting them.

(9,605 posts)Our farmers lost the Chinese market to Brazilian farmers.
The difference between Trump's strategy and Joe Biden's is that Joe Biden used a stick and carrot approach. Joe Biden incentivized manufacturers to build their plants in the USA with tax credits, subsidies and other financial incentives.
Trump's strategy was all stick and no carrot. Trump placed some tariffs but the effect of that was companies considering Vietnam or India or some other country to diversify their supply chain rather than bringing their plants back to the USA. He scared them away from China (kinda... a little bit) but drove them into the hands of other countries. There was nothing to entice them to come back to the USA.
They had the same idea, but their strategies were entirely different. IMO, Trump's strategy was terrible. Biden took a more diplomatic approach as well, including other countries in his China strategy. Trump just thinks the USA can go at it alone, and his strategy reflects that.

(15,881 posts)The impression being given is that "see, they both had tariffs, so both sides are the same."
It's a quick and simple argument, made for our increasingly quick and simple world.
Of course, President Biden's economic policies and VP Harris' proposed policies are light years different from Donnie Dipshits'.
Kind of like saying Santa and the Unibomber are "the same", because they both deliver packages.
