A little over $200 was taken from it, yesterday.
I've canceled the card, will be getting a new one.
Not sure if I'll get back my $200.
But whoever hacked it still is trying to buy shit with it.
On-line gaming and "health foods."
Update:
It's been two days now, the card no longer works, but the scammer is STILL trying to buy shit on-line with it.

through asia righ after high school. His card got stolen This was before there was electronic verification. Everything was done with slips of paper. He noticed it missing a day after he had his wallet out on a counter. We were not in touch with him as it was the 80s and email didn't exist. My dad got a bill for about $15,000 in bath house charges across Asia and Europe. My brother happened to call and my Dad said "my brother's name, have you gone crazy!!" My bother explained that he canceled the credit card within a day of when he thought it went missing. My dad didn't have to pay.

(8,641 posts)It's unclear how true this is or ever was. I do use my credit card for everything though. I feel like any bogus charges are screwing with the bank's money and not my money.

(8,641 posts)Credit cards generally have lower liability limits for unauthorized transactions.
Fraudulent charges on a credit card don't directly affect your bank account and won't block access to your funds.
Debit cards can sometimes take longer to resolve issues as you'll be dealing directly with a bank and not a credit-card company.
I also like to tie up the bank's money with credit card purchases and pay it off in full every month. It is a revolving zero-interest line of credit if you are disciplined.

(2,468 posts)1. I have a checking account that I only use for the debit card.
2. I turn off overdraft protection so that the thief cannot steal not only your debit card balance but also the overdraft account balance.
3. I have automatic monthly transfers from a savings account or money market to the debit card checking account of say $200.
This will minimize the loss should the bank screw you out of the money. It is extra work to make sure your debit card checking account has enough cash to make your purchases. And if you need more cash for a particular purchase, do a manual transfer of money to the debit card checking account.

(1,327 posts)A lot of fraud comes of that-- crooks install card-reading devices on the gas pumps that can steal your information... Google it.
Supposedly you should take a good look at the card-area on the pump to see if it doesn't look right... I've read about it.

(6,687 posts)....just as I deposited a few thousand at the bank in cash. Number of churches in my faith donated it to pay for deductibles, co pays, groceries, etc. when my wife almost lost her life due to an extremely rare condition. Talk about insult to injury. They bought a crap load of stuff at Autozone. Called the bank, cancelled the card and then had to come back in as it was over a threshold and needed to be filed with the police.
Usually its from a gas station that still requires you to swipe your card instead of using the chip. Sometimes I think certain people working there may be in on it. Was at a friends house and as I was leaving I asked which is the closest gas station, he told me, but also said don't go there, twice his card got compromised right after using it there as they were still using the swipe method. Told me to go to another one a bit further as it had the chip.
Another time, I was in Mexico and told the bank I was going to be there...then someone tried to use in Australia. Bank declined the charge of course, but left my card open until I got back and then gave me a call to come in and get a new card.
