For some Christian Right they convinced them that they had a divine right to be a dominant force in America. For others it was fear of persecution that they planted in their heads.

And once they had these people corralled, slowly but slowly they began using politics to try to achieve their objectives, and politics requires alliances. So, there were alliances with unsavory characters and organizations. But the racism? I think that is ingrained in White Southern Christianity.
