My only fear is that the damage might include people undeserving of such an action.

Of course since some of the MAGA say that Trump was appointed by God then it will only happens if it is God’s will or sanctioned by God.

The defeatism on this site has become an epidemic.

Some of us are old enough to remember what it felt like wake up the day after election day realizing we had lost by over 17 million votes and more than 500 electoral votes. Happened twice in my lifetime. I'm not downplaying how awful Trump is. He is the worst president in our history. But there are more of us now than there were back when we were getting creamed by Reagan and Nixon. I'm not prepared to surrender, but it sure seems like a lot DUers have already decided we're doomed.

I come here for news and thoughtful, realistic takes but often leave with a rising sense of panic.

People are devastated and getting it all out. I'm sure a lot of it is grief and fear and purging but it also sounds like the anticipatory obedience I've been reading about, notably from Josh Marshall in TPM.

I'd feel better if people framed their scary takes as "I am worried that ..." or "I am afraid that ..." instead of stating something will happen without laying out how it will realistically happen. For the Reichstag Fire theorists, there have got to be some points in between that and the suspension of elections.

I'm no lifeguard but the past week has felt an awful lot like a double drowning in progress.

He promised the beautiful Christians they would not have to vote again. The Supreme Court gave him unlimited power. He wants the military to pledge fidelity to him and not the Constitution. Republicans have senate and the house, they are not going to go against him. The only way is maybe there is Republicans who are loyal to the country and would switch parties. I would not hold my breath.

Yeah, but that would be against the rules, wouldn't it? It mean hey it isn't like he has support from half of the population or anything. I mean if he were trying to staff the military, Homeland Security (aside - why in the hell did Democrats ever roll over for that???), ICE and the FBI, then that would be a different story.

Wake me up when he threatens to use the government to take revenge against his political opponents, or round up millions of people and put them in camps, or if he says he wants to be a dictator, or when he expresses admiration for dictators.

Yeah, sure, if any of that stuff ever happened I would be very, very alarmed.

After all, Russia still has elections. Hungary still has elections.

The idea is to run sham elections that seem legitimate. They’ll even let some Democratic candidates win, just never enough to hold majorities or the Presidency.

And they won’t be 90% elections like Putin or Saddam Hussein had. They’ll be close but never quite enough for them to lose.

If the economy is good and people can stuff their fat faces with eggs for pennies then most people are too dumb or indifferent to care, would be my bet.

He is going to relentlessly tease a second term. Everyone should be clear eyed about that. I don’t think he will cancel the election but he will toy with the idea challenging the 22nd amendment.

Sat Nov 16, 2024, 02:12 AM

only how the citizens feel about it from what the propaganda tells them. Has inflation climbed in the recent years? Yes, but nowhere to the extent it would have without the Biden administration managing the "soft landing" and outpacing the rest of the world.

Citizens don't understand inflation, deflation and everything around them. Nor did they understand their anxiety as being partially driven by a wage gap that has been shrinking the middle class for decades now. That isn't the doing of Joe Biden. It's the course favored by our corporate overlords and our emboldened oligarchs.

If economic times get dire enough then all the propaganda possible can't fool citizens, but at that point the average folks are so strapped, worn out, powerless and hopeless they rarely manage to do anything about it.
