My bet would be he knew damn well there was no place for him inside a DemParty primary fight; he would have been dismissed out of hand for the sideshow he is.

Ergo, run as a republican businessman and see what kicks loose.

He couldn't profit off the party and they wouldn't kiss his fat annoying ass.

He's nothing but an opportunistic grifter who would be in prison has he not been born with a silver spoon.

The man is almost 80 years old and acts like a petulant child.

he was just being his own super-narcissistic conman self when he pretended to be a democrat while playing the manhattan real estate game, which requires working relationships (and in his case, probably illicit relationships also) with the heavily democratic local government. so the choice of parties was obvious.

eventually no one in new york would do business with him, they had no use for him and he had no use for them. he changed his business model to boosting his image more broadly and licensing his name. in that part of the business world, republicans dominate; and certainly once he overtly went political, again, the choice was obvious.
