Women Stockpiling Reproductive Medicine in Anticipation of Coming Bans
Women all over the U.S. have begun stockpiling the abortion pills Mifepristone and Misoprostol, and Plan B morning after pills in anticipation of the looming Trump presidency and the likely crack down on contraception. The day after the election "is the morning after pill legal?" searches on google had increased by 700%.
Wisp, a telehealth service that provides sexual and reproductive health care, has seen a massive increase in sales following the election results. Emergency contraception sales increased by approximately 1,000% and new patient emergency contraception sales were up 1,650%; birth control were up 50%, and medication abortion orders went up by 600%.
One of the biggest providers of abortion pills, Aid Access, said it received 10,000 requests for the drugs in 24 hours following the election call Wednesday; 17 times higher than the 600 requests the organization normally receives in a day.
Aid Access Founder Rebecca Gomperts said, "We have an extremely streamlined process and we are capable of dealing with all the requests really fast. But its much more [than usual]. And I think the reason is people are now much more aware, people are aware of the possibility of the abortion pill and aware of the threat it will be taken off the market."
