When hitting on a post with a video, Im taken to a screen that says I must sign in to YouTube to view the video.
First, Im already signed in to YouTube at the time.
Secondly, when I hit it to sign in I am directed into a page of videos that have nothing to do with the one from DU that I wanted to see.
Am I the only one having this problem or is there a setting to get directly into YouTube to view a video, as I used to do for years.
I will not spend half of my morning chasing down a video.

1) someone posts a video on DU
2) a flurry of clicks makes YT algorithm believe bots are clicking, so YT blocks clicks from DU
my workaround (on iphone anyway) when i get that problem:
1) reload page (to get rid of that error)
2) tap towards the bottom right part of the YT window
3) for me, that opens the video directly in YT.

(8,666 posts)I use NordVPN, and don't have to disable it to make it work by clicking on the lower right corner of the window.

(25,238 posts)I've had that problem, too. It turns out that some videos are age restricted to 18+. We all get that sign in page in that circumstance.

(23,269 posts)And unfortunately I have no idea why they're doing this. There is some speculation that they're doing A/B testing to decide whether to require that all embedded videos require sign in, but who knows.
The bottom line is that when you see a YouTube embed on DU, you're essentially seeing the actual YouTube site, tucked into a DU page. The embed contains YouTube's own code, and we have no control over what they do with that code within those embeds.
So I'm afraid there is no solution to this (that I know of) at the moment...
Edited to add: meow2u3 is correct that some YouTube videos are age restricted and require sign-in before they can be viewed, or are required to be viewed on the YouTube site itself. However, I'm not sure that's entirely what's going on here -- from the reports I've been seeing, it's happening on videos which should not be age-restricted.
FWIW the problem also appears to be pretty random -- personally I've never been asked to sign in to watch a YouTube embed on DU.
Second edit: If you are using a VPN, there's a chance that could be causing the problem... when you find a video that asks you to sign in, try disabling the VPN and reloading the page to see if it still asks you. (Whether or not you want to do this depends on how comfortable you are disabling the VPN.)

(8,067 posts)It hasn't effected me yet, but I've seen quite a few posts.
If you search "youtube video" on DU, you might find a solution in some of those replies.
edit to add: I see EarlG has posted with what he knows. Since it isn't effecting everyone, I wonder if it depends on what device you're using.

(4,728 posts)I don't do googletube, so I assumed they're just mining for PII to sell.
One reason I don't do videos. Especially with bold yellow clickbait text.

Giggle is evil. I don't do googletube. If the service is free, YOU are the product.

(316 posts)to see if that made the video show up which it did. I don't have a YouTube account... And I didn't watch the video...

(4,728 posts)on a few occasions where a video might actually provide info.
The medium itself, like tv, uses a LOT of bandwidth and viewing time to convey very little actual info. Very low signal-to-noise ratio. Text is information-rich and uses up very little time to read it. Sometimes an image conveys emotional impact that text can't deliver, but most videos are a huge waste of time and bandwidth.

(3,767 posts)And using Safari. I had that problem on almost every yt video. Refreshing may or may not work. Ive found sometimes when I reboot my phone it works. I also have google chrome. I can use it and it seems to work every time. I do like safari better. I found if I go over to chrome play a couple videos when I go back to safari the videos work. At least for awhile.

(11,076 posts)Its just a personal preference. Sometimes Im in a public place, where the audio will disturb those nearby. Please just give me a transcript, the printed word, a hint of what its about .

(4,728 posts)finding obscure songs I haven't heard in ages, frinstance. But now that Giggle owns it and commoditizes it I avoid the videos.
I notice a post upstream where the person says vids work in safari once viewed on a goggle product. That sounds like: once gaggle has harvested your personal data to sell, it unlocks the video.
My net hygiene efforts result in very little spam and phishing. DTD: Digitally Transmitted Disease. I now think of visiting commercial media sites like having unprotected sex, and vpn's like using condoms.
