Well, ok that last is total conjecture, but when Russia has already published a map showing Ukraine as a Russian country along with part of Poland, it's easy to go there. I wouldn't be surprised if he planned on us backing Russia against Europe in WW111, he certainly likes and respects the murderous Pooty and is his lap dog.
