(1,445 posts)researching "mermaids" and symbolism, history, mythology. Mostly in regards to a PBS production that spoke a lot about slavery. Was surprised what I found really. And yes, that is one of my XHandles.

Bad choice on my part to drop the thread with the basic references.
Merpeople are a work of fiction but have a darker, more sinister side to them and exploited and used as symbolism during the time of slavery as well as to appeal to the general public. Just look at the dark illustrations of the Fee-Gee. Then of course there is the "monkey" referance.
I find it actually pretty interesting that conservatives made a stink when Disney cast a woman of color as one.
You would have to do some research and reading to see how there is a connection.
