(72,179 posts)I learned about the Statue of Libertys French origin when I was, like, six years old.
Its a little annoying when American patriots (🙄 ) , dont know anything about American history.

(41,631 posts)... there's also an exact replica in France, that is smaller. I believe the smaller version was a trial run to get the dimensions right before the molds were created for the full-size version.
Thank you France, for this enduring symbol of our "Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite"!

(6,356 posts)When I was stationed in northern Japan back in the '90s, I went for a drive in the countryside and found a 1/4 scale Statue of Liberty sticking up over the trees in (what appeared to be) a remote field. Couldn't find an open route to get closer, but I see now from the map on the online site that I would have had to go around a lake, into town, and come back west to reach it.

(11,767 posts)When you have knowledge, and are curious, you will first find that even though you know a lot, there is a lot more out there that you absolutely don't know, and that there is little of which you can be absolutely certain. It is humbling and frustrating at times.
People who tend to be ignorant and incurious are often satisfied with what they "know" and certain about their correctness. They also expect to be, and are often granted equal weight in their opinions in media or social narrative.

(8,595 posts)6 months abroad in Rome said that, "They say Venice is over hyped." ("They" hadn't bothered to visit it.)
(I lived there for 7 years ... Venezia, OVERHYPED ?!?!?!?" )
It was all I could do not to strangle her.

(76,695 posts)But, overhyped it is not. Gorgeous & charming.
My favorite story of locals putting up with my pidgin Italian with a Sicilian dialect happened in Venezia.

(8,595 posts)every breath I took there -- it's a quirky place, for sure! BTW, the locals think that anything at the other end of the bridge is "la provincia" -- the provinces -- (London, Paris, Rome ...) So I can imagine their attitude at your Sicilian accent!

(179,005 posts)So I went back some years later. It's amazing. Anyone who thinks it's "over-hyped" had already decided he was going to hate it and nothing would change his mind.

(60,182 posts)The Statue of Liberty, which was made in France, can't hold a candle to the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor, which just happens to be the same one made in France.
And the Belgians and Austrians who contributed this part of the Jefferson Building of the Library of Congress in Washington can't touch the Belgians and Austrians who contributed this part of the Jefferson Building of the Library of Congress.

You'd think America had a factory somewhere for churning out human embarrassments.
If there is such a thing, you can't fault their quality control.

(33,424 posts)It was to be placed at Port Said at the northern end of the Suez Canal. Early models of the statue were called Egypt Carrying the Light to Asia. It was to be a Muslim woman. Egypt got cold feet about the project because of cost and the designer changed his concept to be placed in New York.

Oh no, Jesse! Your freedom to be wrong on Xitter has been violated! What a shame! Or, as the French (who gave us the Statue of liberty) might say, "Quel dommage!"

(11,767 posts)What has enabled the human species to flourish on earth is growing from experience. Trial, error, and learning leads to improvement. If our ancestors had been satisfied with hunting, gathering, living in caves or whatever structures they could find or fashion from the elements, we would not have global communication, ventured beyond our limited geographical boundaries, into space, or into the depths of the ocean.
It is sad that so many people think that his ignorant take and defensiveness is anything positive.
Are certainly free to express your ignorance and stupidity on Musk's site. Other people are also free to tell you how stupid and ignorant your statement was. That is freedom and consequence. Being corrected and even mocked, is not oppression. I am sure that if he had accepted his mistake and changed or deleted his post, the whole situation would be over already.

Their kids will be humiliated, repeatedly, by people here and abroad who know more about the history of this country than they do.
Why would they want that? Knowledge is power... Or are they continuing to teach the full history at private schools while public school students are systematically stripped of their power?
