Kamala Harris: “Hip-Hop Is the Ultimate American Art Form” https://hollywoodreporter.com/news/music-news/kamala-harris-hip-hop-50th-anniversary-concert-1235586558/ via @thr

Vice President Kamala Harris @VP 15h
Hip hop is a celebration of Black joy, freedom, and liberation. It was my honor to commemorate the 50th anniversary of this ultimate American art form by hosting the first-ever hip hop event at the Vice President's Residence.

I didn’t know hip hop was that old. I thought it all started in 1979 with “Rapper’s Delight”. Going to look up it’s history now.

We all have our preferences, but it's always good to understand the range of good and bad within any genre. It keeps one's tastes from fossilizing and limiting the discovery of new variations in art and culture.

Rock has many variations within, from its origins (which came largely from the same subculture as hip hop) to all the prefixed iterations that followed.

I grew up exploring modern music; prog-rock, art-rock, psychedelic, electronic, funk, and so much more. It always expanded the horizon of my knowledge of the possible. As a result, I'm still open to new horizons, while also enjoying classics of earlier times. In my 60s now, but I'll likely continue on that path of continual discovery for life. I highly recommend it.

Hybridization and synergy is culture's best friend.

It’s also good to have a young VP who celebrates with the younger generation. Not trying to be superficial…but…really good to see her in pink for a change from those brown pantsuits 🤭

Just kidding, I still remember exactly where I was in December of 1979 in sixth grade when I first head hip hop.
