A UC Berkeley fraternity house was allegedly targeted in an antisemitic hate crime over the weekend, officials said.


The Berkeley Police Department said someone called to report a hate crime around 1 a.m. on Saturday. The police said a group of “college-aged students” had thrown dozens of crawfish at the Alpha Epsilon Pi house and through its windows.

Alpha Epsilon Pi, at 2430 Piedmont Ave., is a Jewish fraternity. Jewish people who keep a kosher diet do not eat shellfish, according to Jewish dietary law.


The group who allegedly vandalized the building comprised six people, the fraternity said in a statement posted to social media. The fraternity said it believes throwing non-kosher food at the house was intentional, noting the incident took place “on the first Shabbat of the school year.”

It turns out, though, this was a "prank". I am guessing a group of idiots who will claim "we didn't know", but when the news broke, they got freaked and some turned themselves in. I figured it was likely an anti-Semitic event given the location as I would not be at all surprised.
