There is no inflation?
Huh?
The cost went up because of the cost of everything related to owing a car, parts, medical costs, replacement value and every other thing you can think of!
Has your car insurance gone up a lot too?
I have one claim that I filed over 10 years ago when I hit a dog running across the interstate and I could not stop as there was a huge storm going on and they tell you not to try to stop, to hit whatever it is.
Other than this one incident, I have filed no claims with this company I've had insurance with for 37 years!
My car is 22 years old and has 65,000 miles on it. I drive less than 3,000 miles a year!

(22,215 posts)I just have liability, property damage and also fire, theft and vandalism.
What justifies such a huge increase on such an old car that isn't drive much by a driver that doesn't drive much?
Is it because the car itself isn't worth much?
This makes zero sense to me.

(22,215 posts)I live on SSA and I receive a very small $100 pension from my former employer and that is it.
I didn't plan it to be this way but I got sick and ended up having to be disability retired from my job.
If I thought I could work a job of any sort, even at a McDonald's, etc. I would do it!
This really sucks.
The projection for the next SSA increase is only 3%.
I don't know who comes up with these numbers!

(17,802 posts)Could have more to do with liability than collision coverage. Could also be hurricane nonsense.
A lot of carriers are up and leav I ng flood prone areas and others are just raising rates until they can.
Climate change.
I haven't noticed an increase, but everything is bundled so it's hard to tell.

(22,215 posts)The car insurance was much cheaper than when I lived in San Francisco.
It was over $1,000 a year for TWO cars when I first moved here 30 years ago.

I used it once about 20 years ago when an uninsured driver totaled my car. I was glad I had it.

(22,215 posts)That incident was no fault just like yours was.
Why go after people like us who have never or rarely had to file a claim for years on end only to get hit with a huge increase out of the blue?
They have a whole list of reasons for the increase to justify it.
Still,
The inflation created by others in now my problem?

(37,182 posts)I think that prices across the board are going up because of corporate greed and these CEOs need to make the economy worse in order to get more Republicans elected. The Republican party is literally falling apart before our eyes, and the only thing keeping them somewhat relevant is inflation.

With a car that old, it makes no sense to carry full insurance.
Allstate doubled my premium on homeowner's insurance, so I shopped around and got a policy from Farmer's for more coverage and half the price. Shop around.

(35,075 posts)Let's see how they treat me after my first 12 months. lol

(35,075 posts)Recently I was in your shoes. I got so pissed that I looked up a bunch of alternatives. For me, the issue was needing to move my home insurance too because I found out I was extremely UNDER insured and my rate, which was high, was based on having both auto & home together. Add to that, I've never had my roof replaced, so of course that was causing the home quotes to be high.
I was impressed with progressive direct's auto rates but their home quote wasn't customizable like I wanted. I was literally seconds away from signing up with Geico for both home & auto when an Allstate agent called. The quote was ridiculous (young agent who had no idea what he was doing), but I checked out their site myself to tinker around with the numbers some more.... wow. First of all, their site was very easy to use, except for some of the confusion around their uninsured motorist insurance plans. I signed up and I've saved so much money. I know I sound spammy right now but it's true. I never thought they'd be the cheapest option, I never even considered them. That said, my driving record is impeccable and maybe they like people like me. lol.
Oh, one more thing, they have a driving monitoring app called DriveWise, which I went ahead and signed up for because it does not hurt your rate (supposedly). It only helps. I used it for 3 days and then got a notice of $90 refunded from my already super low premium (I prepaid). I always "force" quit the app before driving on the interstate, but I keep it on for street driving around town. lol

(13,282 posts)be warned the first year after I just got a raise of $50 or so and thought no big since they saved me a lot. Bill coming due in Sept $200 more for auto and $150 more for home insurance. I have had no claims, have one older car 2004 just to drive dog around in and my 2017 Prius.
the older car has liability only on it. We have a newer roof on house but price to rebuild has gone up.
ecstatic
(35,075 posts)I think I will be a lot more aggressive going forward about switching it up when the insurance company acts up. I put up with nonsense from my old insurer for 18.5 years!!! When I switched I didn't even bother talking to my agent. He called a few times and left messages but it was too late. I had asked him multiple times over an 18 month period to do something with the rates and he kept giving me BS excuses. I don't think I have an agent now, which is fine with me.
Tree Lady
(13,282 posts)where they track you on speed and braking. I don't want them to have excuse to raise rates if I accidentally brake wrong or speed so I said no. Did you sign for it?
ecstatic
(35,075 posts)drivewise does not penalize bad driving. Also, it's not an aggressive, memory hogging app. It's super easy to disable it when you don't want your driving monitored. From what I've seen so far, it is very forgiving, even when I'm being my normal driving-self. It doesn't track what the speed limit should be for an area. It only gives a warning if you go over 80 mph or do invasive stuff on your phone while driving. I've texted, made calls, changed songs and did a lot of UI interactions through Android Auto with no issues or dings. A couple of times I forgot about it and pulled my notification shade down on my phone and the app didn't even mention it, but it's possible I was stopped at a light or something. The only suspicious ding I've received was from "hard-braking" which I'm not even sure what they were referring to. Every trip has the option of being removed or categorized as "passenger."
Oh, make sure your phone is stable when driving with the app on - I use the cup shaped phone holder to keep my phone stable.
The frustrating / annoying aspect is that it's not a temporary trial, it's permanent. If I decide not to continue I'm sure my premium will increase immediately.

(13,282 posts)We live near mountains and many times loose cell briefly or for a long time over pass to visit family.
ecstatic
(35,075 posts)your cell drops signal during a trip that you check the app after. There was one time that it thought I was still driving while I was out walking around with my phone jiggling around in my purse. It could be that my signal dropped and then when it came back on I was already walking around. I deleted that trip, of course.
I know, it's a pain in the neck kind of. Who wants to think about this? It's definitely not as bad as I thought but it is annoying to even have to think about an app. If I were you, I'd use it for 3 to 5 days, being super good, and wait until you get the refund notification. Then just allow it to run once a week or so. If you have an android, you can go to app info and "Force Stop" it. Then on the day you're ok with monitoring, just open the app and it will automatically run in the background.
If you go less than 80 mph and don't physically touch your phone while driving, you could leave it on all the time with no issues (except when for it thinks you're driving but you're walking, lol).

(256 posts)I switched to Geico back in 2018 or something because they covered me when driving for Uber. That was even cheaper than I had with Liberty Mutual whom I was happy with and had been with them for many years.
The next year I put my p/u truck on it too and my wife as a driver.
We have had no accidents in decades. No garage.
This year it got cheaper. I think it's $138/month for my 2019 Impala Premier with collision, and my 2007 Chevrolet pick up with no collision. In Massachusetts.

Property damage is at $100,000
Liability is at $250,000
I bet if I dropped the coverage down a lot, my premium would be a lot lower.
That said, if I ever wanted to increase the coverage back to these levels they'd likely not do it.
I don't know what to do.
The cost of the policy for a year is less than $500. It used to be less than $300 a year.
Maybe I should shut the fuck up and just deal with it.
That's what I think.

(4,002 posts)I pay over $2k every six months for full coverage here on a 2019 Caddy and a slightly older Nissan in SoCal for my husband and I with clean driving records. I've read that up to 40% of people don't have insurance here. I have good coverage with higher limits and have high uninsured/underinsured limits.
I was hit by an uninsured motorist once when I lived in AZ. Fortunately, I had good coverage and gap insurance, so I wasn't screwed. I'd have been on the hook for about $5k of the car loan if not for the gap. Car was totalled and State Farm came in about $28k on my six month old Lincoln. I owed $33k to Ford Credit. I've used gap insurance three times in my life, so I always take it.
