People Are Happy Tonight

I live in a 55+ community here in Palm Springs CA. Over 600 houses, a few years old, with a lot of LGBT neighbors. We have a good sized "friends" group here with monthly events for fellow LGBT neighbors and friends. I have straight neighbors flying pride flags in support. I feel safe here.

I've noticed today people are upbeat. I took the dog out tonight and met another couple (guy and his husband) at the dog park and they were cheerful. They mentioned the indictment, the Alabama SCOTUS ruling, and Pat Robertson. I commented having all this happen during Pride month was extra ironic.

Several of my neighbor dog owner friends who are Jewish were there too. As our dogs played we were all in a good mood. Almost celebratory. One lady said she had a bottle of champagne opened and walked over with a glass (and her dog).

I love living here. Financially it's tough and I worry a lot. But we will make it. After years in SC for work surrounded by racist pro-Trump rednecks I will never go back. My new home is what America is supposed to be. I wish everyone could experience it.

6. I am happy for America, but also afraid for it

There is still a legal system that acts as a system of checks and balances on the rich and powerful. We are seeing the pursui of justice.

Afraid because the GOP and their media are using this as another reason to undermine the rule of law, the Constitution, and our democracy. The fate of our democracy is on the line, but last night was a necessary step to defend our country from those trying to destroy it.

Either we end up with a stronger Democracy after 2024, or our country is plunged into something else.
