Lindsey Graham claims women kill 'babies' up to the 'moment of birth' in rant against abortion rights

David Edwards April 09, 2023

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) said that liberals had recently flipped the Wisconsin Supreme Court because conservatives failed to put forth a plan to ban abortions.

.............

"Isn't that what happened this week in Wisconsin, where the pro-choice candidate won by 10 points getting a seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court?" Bream asked.

"Well, I'm very pro-life, and I think being pro-life is a winning message. I oppose late-term abortions," Graham said, shifting the topic. "I have a bill to set a national minimum standard of 15 weeks. 50 of the 53 European nations ban abortion at 15 weeks. I have an exception for rape, incest, and life of the mother. In Wisconsin, you had an 1840 statute that banned abortion pretty much across the board, and the Republican Party did not put an alternative on the table. If you're pro-life, you need to explain what that means."

40. That trope is SO tired and so stupid, isn't it?
Mon Apr 10, 2023, 04:08 PM
Apr 2023

It doesn't make any rational sense to me that anyone would deliberately wait till the very last minute to have an abortion, just because they can. No one finds out they're pregnant, says, "Okay, cool," then changes their mind when they're almost 9 months along (or even 7 or 8).

When someone gets pregnant, they usually know right away if they want to be pregnant or not, and if the answer is "not" and their choice is abortion, they want to get it over with as soon as possible. Nobody says, "Oh, what the hell, I'll just try being pregnant for a while, I can always have an abortion later on if I get tired of it. Yeah, that's it, I'll just carry this pregnancy until AFTER my body has already gone through drastic changes and I'm big as a house and have already had to buy a whole new wardrobe, and then I'll call a halt to the whole thing. Yeah, that's the ticket!" /heavy sarcasm

And yet people like Lindsey expect us to believe that there are swarms of women--swarms, I tell you--deciding to do exactly that, ALL the time, so people like him just have to get busy and make laws to stop them! Right, and bananas grow on apple trees.

Here are the actual facts, Lindsey (Remember what facts are? Those things that you prefer to disregard?):

When during pregnancy do most abortions occur?

The vast majority of abortions occur during the first trimester of a pregnancy. In 2020, 93% of abortions occurred during the first trimester – that is, at or before 13 weeks of gestation, according to the CDC. An additional 6% occurred between 14 and 20 weeks of pregnancy, and 1% were performed at 21 weeks or more of gestation. These CDC figures include data from 40 states and New York City (but not the rest of New York).
TSource: https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2023/01/11/what-the-data-says-about-abortion-in-the-u-s-2/

That's right, around 1% of abortions are performed at 21 weeks or later. And most of those, I hasten to add, are WANTED pregnancies that took some kind of catastrophic turn, such as a threat to the pregnant person’s life or a fetal anomaly that is incompatible with postbirth survival. The people who are dealing with such tragedies have enough on their plates already, Lindsey, and the LAST thing they need is idiot lawmakers making things more complicated by enacting laws with arbitrary abortion deadlines that don't even recognize the situations they've been confronted with.

Ugh. If there's anything I hate more than fake, disingenuous "concern" from hypocrites like Lindsey Graham, I don't know what it is.

25. This is a warped and twisted spin on European abortion laws.
Mon Apr 10, 2023, 10:53 AM

50 of the 53 European nations ban abortion at 15 weeks.

The facts are much more nuanced than this, especially when compared to this country, where so many states are rushing to ban it at 5 weeks with fewer and fewer exceptions.

European Abortion Laws: A Comparative Overview
https://reproductiverights.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/15381_CRR_Europe_October_2022.pdf

From the above source:
For more than sixty years Europe has led the continuing global trend towards the liberalization of abortion laws and the legalization of women’s access to safe and legal abortion.

Today almost all European countries allow abortion on request or on broad social grounds and only a very small minority maintain highly restrictive laws prohibiting abortion in almost all circumstances. The standard practice is to legalize abortion on request or broad social grounds, at least in the first trimester of pregnancy. Almost all countries also ensure that abortion is legal throughout pregnancy when necessary to protect a pregnant woman’s health or life.

Since 2018 several European countries have enacted important progressive reforms or taken steps to remove harmful procedural and regulatory barriers that can impede access to legal abortion.

Also:
Time limits

Some European countries’ laws set the time limit for abortion on request or broad social grounds between 18-24 weeks of pregnancy, whereas many set the limit around the first trimester of pregnancy. However, all these countries’ laws also allow access later in pregnancy in specific circumstances, such as where a woman’s health or life is at risk. The standard practice across Europe is to not impose time limits on these grounds.

A number of European countries have enacted reforms to extend the time limits for access to abortion on request or broad social grounds. These reforms recognize that although most abortions in Europe take place during the first trimester of pregnancy, rigid time limits can have harmful impacts, create pressure and further complications for women who seek abortion care.

that in America, while the RW extremist position that life begins at conception, the LW's most extreme corollary is that life begins only on leaving the mother's body. Until then ONLY the woman is a person with rights to life or anything else, the rest is "her body, her choice."

I know that because some who come here to DU hold that position and have defended it angrily and absolutely intractably against my questioning -- that ONLY the woman has rights and there should be NO law limiting a woman's right to abort at ANY point for ANY reason before separation.

According to discussions here, the "fetus" is not a person before separation and has no right to life, much less liberty or pursuit of happiness. My question as to whether delivery of the head might establish a right to life before the feet were out was met, like others, with intractable restatements of the position -- it's STILL only the mother's body. Not only is NO law needed, but ANY law is a denial of women's rights and would result in enslavement! Continued attempts to tack down when a second person came into existence and would qualify for legal protection (how much separation is separation?) only resulted in reiterations that abortion NEVER involved a second person under their definition of women's reproductive rights, but assurances by some, perhaps uneasy at the questions raised, that anyway no one in a nation of 330M people would abort in the last days, much less during labor. Therefore, no law intruding on the woman's absolute right to terminate at will, at any point is needed.

So, Graham is lying that this is already normal, but he's not wrong about the most extreme pro-abortion position on this issue.

Right now nearly 70% of Americans support legal abortion with limits related to viability of the fetus, similar to what we had with Roe; and @90% believe laws that protect the lives, wellbeing, and rights of both mother and child are possible. So both extremist positions are going to lose this one, but right now extremism is having a moment.

"We hold these truths to be self evident,..." Not quite.
