They are typically seen as a factual news source, but the Miami Herald got access to the unredacted warrant and it shows that it's quite possible someone set up an autistic kid to take a fall.

No, a court does not have to decide to take a child from a parent. Children can be taken by the government in several different ways.

1) Arrest
2) Baker Act
3) DCS

When my youngest was 13, the local police showed up at my house on a Sunday evening and Baker Acted him. Why? Because he and a group of friends were goofing around texting memes to each other. He sent one that had to do with self-harm. One of his friends took it seriously and called the police without running it by her parents, my son, or his parents (me).

Despite my son telling the cops he was not suicidal, they took him anyway.

A good friend is a psychiatric nurse and was able to tell me where he was most likely taken. I was told to prepare for him to be held for three days before being released, but fortunately a psychiatrist with a head on her shoulders released him within 24 hours.

The authorities can take kids out of school and not inform their parents. It's insane!!!

Lots of tears, anxiety for years, and $1,000 to the "care facility" for the less than a 24 hour stay was the result.

You're damn right the government can take your kid with no warning.

My initial reaction is, if there's a way, for her and her family to move from Florida. I realize that people have family members and friends whom it would difficult to leave.

I'm not AT ALL piling on the red states and the progressives who live there. I completely understand that people are where they are for a variety of reasons. Once again, I KNOW not everyone can leave.

I was fortunate that I was able to leave my home state of TX in '88 (when I was 31) because my grandmother passed away and left me and my siblings some money. Not a lot, but enough. I had lived in California in '75 when my then husband had joined the Navy and our first duty station was in Long Beach. That's when I fell in love with CA!

Times were very different back then. I was a lot younger and jobs in California were abundant in my field (the hospitality industry). It seems that making a move now would be a lot more complicated and expensive. Having said that, if possible, I hope this lady and her family can get out......
