Robert Reich: Researchers have calculated that the risk of a person in the U.S. dying in a mass shooting was 70 percent lower when the Assault Weapons Ban was in place than it is today.

Facts, data, logic, analysis — do they play any role in what our government decides? The Republican Party in particular no longer listens, or thinks. It is owned — lock, stock, and barrel — by the gun industry.

You might think that preventing young children from being murdered in random mass killings by assailants with assault weapons would be a goal shared by all lawmakers. But you’d be wrong.

The Assault Weapons Ban must be reinstated — the greed of gun manufacturers be damned.

15. Guns + Campaign donations, Super PACs, Revolving Door, and media propaganda.

Majority of Americans want some real gun reform but cannot have it because of the list above. You can change this from guns to climate change and have the same response. You could also substitute immigration, education, taxes, environment, or any other issue with big special interests behind it in place of "guns" and see that the will of the people does not count.

When will we get smart and all focus on the root problems causing most of our problems? I see only two main root problems. Campaign finance and media propaganda. These two are also tied together as the media are the recipients of the campaign money. The big donors are also the big advertisers and they use their leverage to shape the messages we receive.

The oligarchs control our media and government. It would take an almost unified front of Americans to force the changes needed to take away the oligarch's control over us. This is why they encourage political support to be like your favorite sports team. You see your player commit a penalty (do something bad), but you overlook the infraction or even defend it because they are your team (own the Libs).

It seems to me I remember Republicans saying something like, if it saves even only one child’s life it’s worth it. We don’t hear that about guns at all

5. Republicans have been beating the drum for so long that their voters need guns to protect

themselves from all those black and brown folks who are just naturally criminals that they can’t switch gears and back down now. 9. I live in rural Central Texas and I get the feeling that most of my neighbors are

just looking and waiting to shoot something or someone all the time. They paint their fence post purple, I know it sounds strange, but in Texas it is supposed to mean "Don't trespass" and to me not only does it look weird but might as well mean.....I'm a shitkicking asshole who would love to shoot something or someone so just give me the opportunity.

This love affair with guns and all things hillbilly is just a constant reminder of how fucked up Texas has become.....then I go to Austin, the closest city, and it is 180° different with some weird shit there also.

10. Regardless of motive, there are better outcomes without guns

If someone wants to kill a lot of people for any reason, it's much harder without guns. Explosives, planes, etc. are significantly harder for an average person to use. Guns make it too easy.
