Barr, yes the same one as Trump's attorney general, told Bush the First to pardon Reagan's henchmen. The Republican supreme court stopped the vote counting in Florida, stopping vote counting is becoming a popular Republican pastime, allowing Bush the Second to take office. The Republican Senate refused to even give a hearing to Obama's supreme court nominee, and then under Trump rushed through Trump's nominee in haste.
So why wouldn't we believe that the Republicans would gut Social Security just because they pull out their old and tattered "senior-friendly" facade.

Remember the Reagan Republican Social Security cuts !
