Manchin, I can understand. He's in a tough state and anything he can do to help himself get elected in WV is fine by me.
But Durbin is from a solid blue state. He is in no danger of losing his seat. A simple "the special counsel is investigaing this and I will have no further comment until the affair is closed" would have sufficed. He is also the #2 senate Democrat for heaven's sake.
I can understand our senators getting cold feet if Hur had recommended impeachment or something, but that's not where we are at right now in the slightest!
No Republican senator, planning to run for election anyway, would have gone on MTP from 2017-2020 and treated Trump in this fashion.
We need Democrats to line solidly and firmly up behind President Biden, to have his back, as Democracy, itself, is at stake in 2024.

If one of your own is exposed, the honor code demands you defend the code. I bet Durbin is confident that Biden is free from malfeasance, but has a responsibility to represent the party as above complicity in wrongdoing. He is expected to comment. Should he pooh, pooh what has become a political millstone or respond to what is obvious?
None of this would be discussed if it were not for the trump boxes of pandoraware.
If we respond like republicans, we become like republicans. I have a hard time sinking into that miasma.

(96,043 posts)Any attempt to draw similarities between the situations should be explicitly rebuffed, the deliberate criminality of Trump highlighted, made front and center in any answer given by any Democrat to villager pundits eager to chum up a both-sides feeding frenzy among themselves. In fact, pundits ought to be denounced for even asking the question without making clear the differences themselves before the body of the answer is given. These people do seem to react better to kicks than kisses....

If Durbin did not define the differences, he was not a suitable respondent. Did not witness the interview. I should be quiet.

I just wish the goddamn Trump indictments would hurry up.

(3,937 posts)I stand by my inference. If we are to take the high road, then we must admit and learn from our mistakes. Durbin did explain the differences and did so by describing the protocols for handling classified documents.
It gives further justification to calling out trump when you can acknowledge your own team's fallibility and manage the gauntlet as well.
Durbin showed the fox audience a more admirable approach compared to the righteousness of his opponents.
Perhaps, most fox viewers will miss the point, but they are on the attack anyway.
And while I agree the punditry does a disservice to its audience, the public needs to hear from its officials.
It wants and needs to hear from Biden.
It never heard the truth from trump even when his administration responded.
Trump would come up with a distractor and the moment would pass.
This is a sticky wicket.
Politics vs. truth.

It is the same garbage every-time, and we fall for it
Did the press ever apologize for pushing us to invade Iraq based on a lie? There were a few people from Knight Ridder who said loud and clear there were no WMDs, but most of the media ignored that, and pursed the lie. When Hart/Rudman issued the report from the Clinton Administration that AQ was a major threat to the country, and the bush administration disagreed, and said they would do their own report, which was never done, where was the press reporting here w the ball was dropped by the bush administration?
When 11 days before the election, Comey sent a letter to the republicans in Congress how they were looking to see if Weiners laptop contained any new information, not only did the press mischaracterize that by falsely saying email investigation was reopened, but they had every right wing pundit parading across their outlets propagating that lie.
What they did to Howard Dean by making him look unhinged, to giving the swift boat pukes ad free coverage against Kerry by portraying it as some legitimate story
The press stopped doing their job a long time ago after Reagan and the Iran Contra scandal, and have been following that path every since
