Did we or did we (Dem House/Senate)not have the power and time to take care of raising the debt limi

or funding the government before January 3rd? If we did, why didn't we?

Two separate things.

The debt ceiling will expire around July 2023, but congress must act earlier because of the time it takes for legislative and government processes to be enacted (IIRC, the absolute minimum lead time required is something like 2-4 weeks before the Treasury’s identified deadline).

Markets will likely get jittery in late spring if congress hasn’t acted yet.
