The US Justice Department unsealed charges Monday against two alleged Chinese spies who are accused of interfering with a federal prosecution against a global telecommunications company based in China.
According to charging documents, the Chinese telecommunications company was facing federal prosecution in Brooklyn, New York. Though the indictment does not name the company, a person familiar with the investigation confirmed to CNN that the company is Huawei.
The two alleged spies were charged with obstructing the Justice Departments prosecution against Huawei.
Attorney General Merrick Garland and other Justice Department officials are scheduled to make an announcement Monday afternoon related to significant national security cases. The department said in a press release that the cases relate to malign influence schemes and alleged criminal activity by a nation-state actor in the United States.

(4,298 posts)WTF??? Iran has not invaded another country in modern history. We helped overthrow their DEMOCRATICALLY ELECTED PRESIDENT BACK IN 1953. Saddam never attacked us. Yet we ruined the lives of millions and are still seemingly about to do it again obsessed with IRAQ and IRAN while Russia, tramples on allies everywhere. Iran exists in a sea of nukes that surround them yet we clamor about Iran becoming a nuke power...stayed silent about India, Israel, Pakistan and never talk about the weapons and secrets they give away to Russia. SMH!

(7,604 posts)One campaign begins right after the previous elections. When it comes to political notables, NEVER is a good time to indict. Why is Trump immune from prosecution? He's not on the ballot in November. Does he get special consideration since he's ALWAYS running for the next presidential election? He's ALWAYS a candidate, so he's ALWAYS immune from prosecution. Neat trick, huh?

(77,323 posts)President Obama was too close to the elections when he wanted to have Merrick Garland
to just have hearings but Amy Coney Island was given hearings and put onto the court
when the Presidential Elections were actively on going.
And don't forget that Bill Barr made up his own law that you can't indict a sitting President.
BTW TFG is not up for any elected position this fall.
And just because it is close to an election national security is still an issue.

The national security cases will be discussed at a news conference at 1:30 p.m. (1730 GMT), the department said in a statement, without giving further details. It did not name the country or entity.
U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland, Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco and Assistant Attorney General for National Security Matthew Olsen along with FBI Director Christopher Wray will "discuss significant national security cases addressing malign influence schemes and alleged criminal activity by a nation-state actor in the United States," the department said.
The Justice Department also did not cite whether the schemes involved or were aimed at the Nov. 8 midterm U.S. elections.

(8,610 posts)U.S. charges two Chinese nationals with Huawei case obstruction-source.
By Jonathan Stempel, Sarah N. Lynch and Karen Freifeld
NEW YORK, Oct 24 (Reuters) - U.S. prosecutors charged two Chinese nationals with trying to obstruct the prosecution of Chinese telecommunications company Huawei Technologies Co Ltd, as part of a broader crackdown on what they called efforts to exert unlawful influence in the United States.
Chinese nationals Guochun He and Zheng Wang were charged in a criminal complaint dated Oct. 20 and made public on Monday. Court documents did not name the company, but a person familiar with the investigation said they were trying to interfere with the prosecution of Huawei (HWT.UL).
***********
The complaint against He and Wang alleges they tried to obtain confidential information concerning witnesses, trial evidence and any potential new charges the company could face.
To do that, it alleges they tried to recruit someone from a U.S. law enforcement agency who they thought would help them spy for China.

(58,785 posts)Under tRump and the contempt his weakness generated, China and other nations greatly increased lawless pursuit of and vengeance against their nationals in America. This is also about theft of technology and equipment.
President Xi's become extremely aggressive internationally, and this is apparently, as described, "a shot across their bow."
Good! Btw, I've read that China's economy is in serious decline under Xi as he clamps down to reinstitute central socialist control of business and the economy, and its population numbers are collapsing, and that's only going to increase their need to steal technology from abroad.

(7,794 posts)In 2019, while the American people were standing flat footed and still in shock that TFG could actually be in the Whitehouse the CPR was conducting espionage that undermined the US republic and threatened democracy.
In 2022, while the American people are sitting on the edge of their seat deathly afraid that the USSRepublican party will take over the legislative branch, thus threatening our democracy the DOJ publicly advertises that our counterespionage capabilities have become so compromised that it takes lawyers (3 years after the fact) to explain how an act of war has been made against our country. Yet they fail to note how TFG made no response at all contemporarily with that act nor do they explain their upstaging the POTUS at this juncture.
This shit is what passes as an excuse for their existence and the reason they've been unable to jail a single high-level traitor for 2 years? It wasn't their priority. It is no surprise that the CPR and the Russian Federation have chosen this era to perform their outrageous activities. We, as a nation, are divided, compromised and vulnerable. Apparently, their oligarchs and ours have agreed on how to divide the remains.

(7,794 posts)Patience is the most valuable personal possession one can own. Squandering it on rehashing, quadruple checking, nit-picking and then after in-depth psychoanalysis refusing to act is tossing your treasure onto the trash heap. When a thing is so serious, and all knowns point to a singularity it is prudent to take physical action into the farthest possible extent supported by existing provable evidence. At this point there should be some law enforcement and DOJ personnel, military officers, congressmen, senators and USSC judges in custody. To date there has been, without explanation, no action such as this taken on any realistic level. It is obviously because the DOJ is itself infected with and all but openly supports the insurrectionists. If either house is taken by the right and the DOJ continues with the charade of investigating the 1/6 violence the whole thing will be further exposed as corrupter and corrupter (as S. Temple might say).
The APB nature of the show and tell put out by the DOJ yesterday was inexplicable in any way except as a "look over there" distraction. It would be interesting to know how POTUS 44's Trans-Pacific Partnership, so condemned by the right, would have affected the efficacy of those CPR shenanigans. Just a thought based on the hypothesis that anything the Republican party can get behind is contaminated by corruption and a conspiracy against the interests of working people.

This is blatant voter intimidation. Absolutely nothing is being done about it. I'm so disgusted. Why do we have to beg this guy to do his fucking job, especially with so much on the line?
