(2,020 posts)Police are at fault for their complete failure to respond appropriately to the active shooter.
As a former teacher, if someone left an exterior door propped or unlocked... they shouldn't have done that. It's a security issue. Or if the janitor or assistant principal was responsible for locking those doors in the morning after drop-off and didn't, maybe it was just a mistake. But it's a security issue that should be examined. We used to forget to lock exterior doors sometimes in the morning. It had to be done manually and so it was easy to forget with a lot of kids, attendance to take, papers to turn in and pass out and the SRO would come around and sweep campus and if he found your door unlocked, he would chew you out and report you to the AP. I used to get annoyed. In hindsight, he was trying to keep us safe.
Big picture, maybe it wouldn't have mattered and the shooter would have gotten into the school another way. But I think it's fair to examine what happened honestly. Maybe it helps to make another campus safer, or as safe as it can be in a country where we won't regulate gun ownership.

I suppose it's a skill to find the appropriate responses to someone losing their kid. But even if your unskilled at that, you don't have to be a heartless bastard.
