In the Midwest they are out of control rising to $4.359 this afternoon. This is the highest the price of regular has ever been where I live, beating the crap out of the Summer of 2008.
Looks like BP, Marathon and Shell will have a phenomenal quarter coming up.

(113,974 posts)the weekend as the latter are the most expensive times. And, if you've been like me (wanting to keep the tank full to avoid any dramatic increase), just know that your fuel gauge may or may not show accurately if you keep tapping it off with just a few gallons. I've always filled at a half tank so I'd never encountered that before and almost took it in to the dealership for an unnecessary repair.
I was ridiculed for several years when gas was pretty cheap for my "ugly" Prius hybrid. I will not be insensitive enough to utter anything to them now as my mind secretly calculates how damned much their big SUVs must cost to fill. But, I do hope this guides all of us in the future. Fossil fuels are not the path for the future. And this only underscores that to be the case.
I have hope that this levels out soon. For everyone.
Oh, and if you have Costco near you, they have (for many months) had the best prices throughout the country.

(151,269 posts)to my supermarket loyalty card. We fill up the car just once a month. It took 8 gallons this time, so I saved a whopping $4. I paid $3.69.9 per gallon if I remember correctly.
Oh, wait...I only saved $4? Hmph...
We deliberately keep our driving to a minimum, and have for some time. Today, I planned my shopping trip to make a one-way circular route, with three stops. Shortest possible distance to get what I needed. We can do that. I know not everyone can, but gas prices, while high, are not so high that they make up a huge increase in spending, overall, I think. It's just that we get used to how much a fill-up costs, so it looks like a lot.

(6,352 posts)If Oil companies see dramatic profits doesn't that mean they've changed that formula? I know they sell more than gas. But it seems like the formula has changed.
Congress should enact price protections for gas consumers.

(12,669 posts)you can. I have cut my driving in half. No problem. makes it like $2.18 a gallon. If you can't cut back go slower, accelerate slower and make your braking smoother. ?

(82,849 posts)How dare you! Do you know how many billions (maybe even trillions) of dollars large corporations have spent convincing U.S. citizens to buy, buy, buy. Buy to your last penny. Buy on credit. Borrow to buy some more. Lie, cheat and steal if you must, but buy.
You start slowing people down, advising them to make a plan, combine trips, drive more conscientiously, and some big shot somewhere might have to settle for a 42-foot yacht instead of that 46-footer he's had his eye on. Oh, the humanity!

Not much mention of cutting back to save.
Showing my age I guess.

(9,870 posts)And yet we built that world, where everybody's trapped in a car to go to work or to groceries or to see the family.
$5.00 a gallon is cheap when you think about how much energy is in that gallon. It'll take you and a few friends and 3000 lb. of steel 20 or 30 miles over hill and dale.
How could our planning commissions and city councils have been so blind all these years as to build the car-based world?

(4,616 posts)They were looking at a nation full of individual $$ signs. We all ran out and bought the cars, some two or three of them. The biggest most gas guzzling ones we could find. "We" still do.
