Dog stayed with body of missing hiker, found in L.A. park

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A hiker who went missing two weeks ago was found dead in Griffith Park with his dog by his side, authorities said. The dog apparently hadn’t left Hernandez’s side for two weeks.

Oscar Alejandro Hernandez, 29, was reported missing on March 16. His body was found Thursday night in a remote area of the sprawling urban park. His Golden Retriever, King, was emaciated but alive, having faithfully remained with his owner until his body was discovered.

Hernandez was last seen near the park merry-go-round’s hiking trails, according to a missing person flier posted by his family. A search and rescue team used a helicopter to remove Hernandez’s body from the steep hillside near a merry-go-round in the east end of the park. There was no immediate word on the cause of his death.

Griffith Park is one of the largest urban parks in the United States, covering 4,210 acres of land in the city’s Los Feliz neighborhood. “Situated in the eastern Santa Monica Mountain range, the Park’s elevations range from 384 to 1,625 feet above see level,”

They are by far my favorite species.

I am sorry for the poor young man, though. I wonder what happened to him? At least he had his faithful friend by him at the end.

As I type this, my almost 14 year old rescue lab has her head resting on my feet while no doubt thinking, "Yeah, you got that right, Dad."
