General Discussion

I remember decades ago, when parents, a few teachers and school brass and preachers went all nutso about Dungeons and Dragons.
"They'll go into satanism! It'll cause drugs! Our kids might even get into *GASP* rock and roll!"
Suffice to say, all those wild stories turned out to be pure horse manure.
Now, a parent in Michigan who doesn't know anything about furrys makes this wild accusation, (which isn't mentioned in this news story but it did occur, the head of Michigan's GOP backs the parent up,) I mean, litterboxes in classrooms?
No evidence of this happening ANYWHERE, but some moron made this story up, and it gets spread on the Internet, mostly through social media.

(491 posts)... I know I'm old enough to be a genuine antique (although I rather be called vintage)
... but is there a furry 'thing'?? or is it fevered mind stuff....
... sometimes, it's good to be old - ya can just say ya don't give a damn and be thought of as cranky

(5,752 posts)like Midwest Furfest and AnthroCon, which were HUGE events in furry fandom. I used to publish web comics in book form and discovered furry fandom after several books we put out got a following among furrydom (Kevin & Kell is still going strong).

Furrys are quite common, it goes back to the half-human half-animal gods of ancient Egypt. Maybe further.
Cartoons have a lot of furrys in them like Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny.
They are imaginary creatures, animals with anthropomorphic tendencies.

(491 posts)it's okay with me lately that I 'just don't get it' about some stuff....
... but sometimes I do get curious about things... usually to end up saying, "well, I just don't think that's important."
As I've said, I'm old

(47,245 posts)Easy example: Star Trek Conventions.
I was at one, back in1976 in Chicago.
It was crazy and overcrowded.
Saw William Shatner get hit with a cream pie.
Today, Star Trek conventions get really weird at times, with people in "Borg" costumes, Klingon warrior outfits, all sorts of strange and good stuff too.

(76,698 posts)I'm not much for dressing in a costume, but I always wanted to do a Borg thing.
Of course, I wouldn't cut my hair for it, so it wouldn't be authentic.
But, that would be a cool costume of a legendary bad guy.

But, if they come too close to me, I'll shoot with my phaser.

(151,268 posts)Seems to me that the phenomenon has more or less faded away.
That some parent in Michigan has made up some story about litter boxes in classrooms does not mean much, it seems to me. It's a lot of crazy mofos out there these days.

(10,969 posts)It's just the novelty for the general public wore off. It got a lot of attention when people were, "Wait, they're doing what?"
Now it's just another group like cosplayers or fetishists (if it's the sexual variety).
They have gatherings and things. Fur Con. Lots of art and comics available online.

(8,492 posts)I enjoyed that movie so much! I remember taking off work and going to the movies to see it. Afternoon, not many people there, which made me feel a bit better about being by myself. Good memories.

(7,510 posts)"Fur and Loathing" is the fifth episode in the fourth season of the television series, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. It was broadcast on October 30, 2003.[1] The episode was influential in introducing many outsiders to the furry fandom and presented stereotypes about the community.[2]
