Why do conservatives continue to repeat the same falsehoods even after being

shown proof to the contrary. Or they change the subject or say they don't want to see proof that they are wrong?

My mother actually told me once that she didn't want to see an article that refuted what she was saying. Another relative gets mad and changes the subject.

It's like you can't even have a conversation about current events! They don't want to hear how many people have been charged with crimes from 1/6. Anything that threatens their fantasies is quickly shot down; not with facts but obfuscation

is a discussion of the falsehoods being false.

Some people who repeat shit even after they've been told it is shit are trying to imprint the shit in other's minds, and some have had that done to them and are simply mistaken (but potentially well-meaning people with no such malignant intent). Teasing out which is which is a tiresome task.

See it all the time.

is hogwash, but they're too invested in the lie to give it up. They're invested in it because it's what they want to believe. Once they pull that thread, the whole thing comes apart, and so goes their moral authority that they treasure so much.

1 - They cannot handle facts that contradict their world view in an honest way. They have never learned the skills that allow them to correct their own errors.

2 - Peer pressure. They fear being ostracized, becoming one of "the others" that their culture isolates. They want to be in the mainstream of their culture even if doing so means they must accept absurdities as facts.

They accept a life of deceit and cognitive dissonance in order to fit in, go with the flow, and avoid the social destruction that would occur if they began living as a rational person who seeks personal growth instead of affiliation with a culture that seeks to hold them back for the benefit of the culture.

Thing is, though, they've turned it into a batter of faith instead of facts. So they don't see it as deceit, they don't even question it. The lies bypass the lie-detection part of their brain and it goes straight to the faith/loyalty part.

Whatever dear leader says, they simply see it as their patriotic and loyal duty to repeat and spread the word, whatever the word may be. They simply don't see it as their place to question their leaders.

Moreover, they really don't even *care* if it isn't true. It's what dear leader needs them to say and believe, so they do it.

„The history of our race, and each individual’s experience, are sown thick with evidence that a truth is not hard to kill and that a lie told well is immortal.“
--Samuel Clemens ("Mark Twain" )

„A lie told often enough becomes the truth.“
--Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov ("Lenin" )

„The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie — deliberate, contrived and dishonest — but the myth — persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.“
--John F. Kennedy

„No matter how outrageous a lie may be, it will be accepted if stated loudly enough and often enough.“
--Isaac Asimov

Though Lenin seems to be the most popularly quoted source in Europe, Mark Twain was close, too. My favorite is JFK's observation of the dangerous myth, though most people in the USA seem to prefer to attribute the idea to Göbbels, who practically translated it word for word from Lenin. This is logical, as Göbbels was a straight socialist before evolving into a so-called "national socialist."

Once you are in a cult, it is hard to escape. Those who tend towards desiring authoritarian leadership desperately need absolute answers. Thinking becomes painful. They will lose their tribe if they question the lies.

If you knew nothing about politics, how long would it take for you to figure out that Trump or Boris was a lying clown? Anyone thinking or observing, even a five year old, should be able to identify these people as crazy in less than a minute.

Only when the shell breaks, only when a foundation shatters do these people escape. If a person equates having to wear a mask properly to giving up all their freedoms, they are blind to logic. After they have ignored simple wisdom and not worn the mask, to change their understanding is to understand that they were potentially and willfully Typhoid Mary. They would have to understand that they were sociopaths putting the minor discomfort of distance and a mask to a higher importance than their creating a very real risk of causing hundreds to be sick, hospitalized or dead in the future.

Unless they are the type that can apologize without holding back or giving excuses, they will not have anything like a mental path to freedom.

Pity the zombies, it takes a miracle to bring them back to life.

13. COGNITIVE DISSONANCE, 7 SIGNS YOU EXHIBIT

Psych 101.

https://www.daviddenniston.com/blog/7-signs-you-exhibit-cognitive-dissonance

Have you ever been struggling inside your mind? Have you been dealing with conflicting thoughts? Like you know in your heart you should follow one particular path, but then you see some new info that pulls you in another direction and you make a different choice that you didn’t intend on making.

You convince yourself that it was the right choice. You reason, it’s okay- it’s what a reasonable doctor would do. Yet, in your heart of hearts, you question the decision.

This my friends is the soul of cognitive dissonance. It can be really hard to detect and all of us will do it from time to time.

Here’s what I read on Investopedia about the definition of cognitive dissonance. “[It is] the unpleasant emotion that results from believing two contradictory things at the same time. The study of cognitive dissonance is one of the most widely followed fields in social psychology. Cognitive dissonance can lead to irrational decision making as a person tries to reconcile his conflicting beliefs.”

This dictionary definition can be a bit heady. Let’s take a look at another one from Ezonomics.

“Cognitive dissonance is one of social psychology's most influential theories. It relates to the way we tend to correct ourselves when our actions go off track. Studies suggest it holds the answer to the important question: “If I don’t feel comfortable with what I am doing, should I change my belief or change my behavior?”

Neurons that fire together wire together. Once you accept anything without reason or evidence, you set the stage to accept other things or anything without reason or evidence.

The indoctrination of religion sets the stage for this.

It is not a coincidence that America has the most religious culture of any industrialized nation and is also experience this level of batshit nutbaggery in everyday life.

In order to form a more perfect union, this will need to be addressed. A good start would be to remove the tax free status of any religion that gets involved in any way with politics.

It’s past time to take the gloves off.

The media report a blatant lie as a "controversial" or, at best, a "disputed" stance.

Then they put up the truth as a different but equivalent piece of information.

Every time the lie is repeated, the whole process is repeated. It is always a win for the liar, thanks to what has happened to "news" in the past 35 years.
