A five-year-old boy in Central Frontenac, north of Kingston, Ont., just wanted to get a new toy for his sister. The problem was he took the family car to do it.
Ontario Provincial Police say they received a call about a suspicious vehicle at around 7:20 a.m. Monday from a neighbour. The vehicle had come to rest in a hayfield.
When police arrived, they found the very young driver, who said that he wanted to go to the store and buy a pink toy tractor for his little sister. The child was not hurt and the car sustained only minor damage. Police confirmed the parents are not facing any charges.
The message from police is to be aware of kids' whereabouts and to ensure that car keys are kept out of the reach of children.

(3,096 posts)when I was about 6-7 (best I can recall), except I wanted to go fishing and dad said no, he was busy or whatever.
My parents just left the keys in all the vehicles and never bothered locking anything.
I never made it to the road, I couldn't see over the dash in the truck and got stuck in a ditch on the property trying to get there.
Dad thought it was funny (I could hear them talking about it later). Mom saw no humor in this whatsoever.
And it is also worth noting that it was the utility truck that I hi-jacked, stick shift and all. It was the one we had the diesel tanks on for field fueling equipment and hauling tools an stuff. I can remember just starting it in first gear and off it went after a bit of lurching.

(30,957 posts)The technology might have stopped this youngster from starting the car. Or could have taken him to the store and back safely.
Say, how did he start the car? HMMM

When I was in high school I had a classmate who had to sit on his school books to see over the steering wheel of his car.

Who knows, this young man may be the next Jeff Gordon, or at least Baby Driver.
