But he did effectively prevent the Fascists from having the violent tour of the city they wanted.

He got dragged hard locally for the choice to hold back the police from "standing between" during the planned events downtown.

The problem is the assumption by many that the police present at these events act to protect the residents of the city. The reality running through is that the police have reliably acted to protect the wanna be nazis. Once that protection was removed.. the fascists ran and hid far from the core of the city.
