General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI just had a reflective DU moment....
I was scanning the In Memoriam link here and went all the way back to the 2005 post about Kephras passing wherein a family member informed us that he died suddenly over his keyboard.
I scanned down the many many posts of condolences and recognized many many names, but only a tiny handful are still here. Almost all of these individuals were active posters heavily involved in the DU community but the vast number have left and have been gone forever. Yes I know why many left, but this broke over me in a nostalgic wave.

(37,848 posts)Don't get me wrong, I cherish the idea of the Memoriam.
But, I DU knew way too many of them.

(1,318 posts)I was a member somewhere around 2004, but probably for only about a year, so I guess I missed whatever that was.

(9,914 posts)not liberal enough, while others felt it was not conventional enough (or too conspiracy theory for some people's blood), if I remember correctly. A lot of old timers were banned because of the arguments that were flying, and the rules of the board changed.
A few people went and started an alternative board that included a lot of the banned members, and some of the banned members just left and went to Daily Kos or somewhere that they were already posting on anyway, in addition to DU, and didn't come back.
Others came back and decided to learn to play nice with the new rules.

Because night of the long knives and a terrible memory.
Been here since close to the beginning.
Was gone for awhile had no net access.
No home.
But in spirit I never left.
Miss Swamp Rat,estimated prophet and prophetess. And Kephra, she always had the eye of Horus avatar.

(20,591 posts)since I joined. I was also tombstoned once, by my own foolishness, during the great Hillary/Obama primary wars, and lost about 30,000 posts. There have been name change amnesties after Bush and TFG, so I don't know if anyone retains their original DU screen name from the old days.

(12,217 posts)and educational resource. As such, I don't remember much from those days.
I used to be a permanent admin/monitor at a very popular chat room, but....well, that was back in the antediluvian days. There was a big event there, as well, and it was known as The Purge. It started as a major schism among the people at the very top, and, oddly enough, the one who prevailed was the one that owned the DNS, the servers, admin access to same, and he was the one that wrote all the code.
I have no idea what the other faction thought they were up to. It was schoolyard crap, compared to what I understand about the NOTLK here.

(68,204 posts)What a tragedy that was for by the next day. I was happy that we would have Sen. Kerry as our new president. Ackk...
But that put my head in the right place for the reality of our presidential elections.
