Pelosi's advice for the 'Squad': 'You're not a one-person show'

BY JOSEPH CHOI - 04/12/21 08:46 AM EDT

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), in a soon-to-be-released biography, offered advice to the “Squad,” telling the progressive group of female lawmakers in the House, “You're not a one-person show.”

Axios reports that Pelosi gave the blunt piece of advice to the group — which consists of Democratic Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (N.Y.), Ilhan Omar (Minn.), Ayanna Pressley (Mass.) and Rashida Tlaib (Mich.) — during one of 10 separate interviews she had with the book's author, USA Today Washington bureau chief Susan Page.

“You’re not a one-person show. This is the Congress of the United States,” Pelosi said of the advice she would offer the lawmakers.

Pelosi and the Squad have exchanged numerous barbs since the group was elected in the 2018 blue wave.

That's not effective legislating. Which is what the job is about.

And, it is Madame Speaker too. I don't discount what she has done for the Democratic party, but her ideas need some freshening up. These newly elected representatives represent where the party needs to go.

And remarkably they appear to fall in line with the OLD original Democratic Party tenets.

Posturing for media position isn't legislating.

There was posted here awhile ago, the list of each House member's effectiveness.

Pretty much told the story of what Spker Pelosi was refering to.

Nah. I totally agree with Pelosi after reading that.

"In 1945, President Truman proposed a national healthcare plan to Congress. In his plan, he outlined five main goals:

Address the lack of trained healthcare professionals in all communities.
Grow public health services.
Increase funding to medical research and education.
Lower the cost of individual medical care.
Bring attention to the loss of income when severe illness takes hold.
Truman’s plan was that all Americans would pay a certain amount in fees and taxes each month to cover the new healthcare program’s costs. With a Democratic controlled House, Truman’s proposal turned into a bill that would end up as part of the Social Security expansion, but it was quickly shot down as people began to fear an increase in taxes. Some people even feared the program would be a “Communist” act, giving too much control to the federal government. This fear was spread specifically by the American Medical Association (AMA). The bill was also halted by Republican Senator Robert Taft’s Taft-Smith-Ball Bill, which would allow states to make healthcare private. As Republicans regained control of the House in 1946, Truman’s healthcare bill died. Truman considered this a failure of his presidency."

To the person who has been a smart, staunch leader in Congress, the best we've ever had. Listen while they keep criticizing our president? Truly insulting and not at all reflective of how valuable a leader the Speaker has been.

the first and only woman SoH, to shut up? And listen to these young women legislators who have accomplished what, exactly?

What bills have they put forward and gotten passed? How many Democrats have they raised funds for and helped get elected/re-elected?

Point to me one accomplishment of the "squad" that comes close to being comparable to Nancy Pelosi's illustrious career - just one.

for her to mentor the younger, more popular Dems for a year and then retire. They are the future leaders in a world that will be very different from what Nancy and others are used to. They problems they face are not the problems she has faced.

both play a vital part in passing legislation. Neither may get all that they want, but the ebb and flow of ideas and more importantly gaining support for those ideas is not monolithic. Every hand has five fingers. Those fingers have different lengths, different purposes, but you need all five for the hand to function at it's best. Nancy's knowledge is an asset that is immeasurable, but so is the voice, and energy of those with the ability to reach people where they are.

and really, it's their job, isn't it? I see the push and pull of various interests as the natural ingredients in legislation, but the wounded government we have that is hanging on by a thread, and the damage done to the electorate have the varying positions of what is needed be nothing but a source of fear. It's like our government, our country, is so damn fragile, we need to be like a horse with blinders and race as fast as possible, for as much as possible until we run out of track.

Ocasio-Cortez, Allies Move to Court Establishment, Not Fight It

Members of Representative Ocasio-Cortez’s so-called Squad are taking leadership roles in the House and building experience on Capitol Hill, turning them into not just ideological purists but also strategic legislators. They’re gently pushing a bolder Democratic strategy and meeting regularly with White House aides, bringing liberal dreams like a $15 federal minimum wage and a permanent child tax credit within reach.

Rather than starting a rival group within the Democratic Party, far-left members are joining and taking leadership positions in the 95-member Congressional Progressive Caucus that’s been around for three decades. Minnesota Representative Ilhan Omar, also elected in 2018, now leads the CPC’s vote-counting team.

Despite being given the red carpet treatment by the punditry dolts. I have never ever trusted her reporting, even if it's generally within the realm of factual context, it is nearly always tainted with a weird smirk, sometimes snide, often not very subtle shot at the Democratic Party in general. Could never stand her.
