the GOP platform supports Puerto Rican statehood. There's actually room for a compromise on DC

I imagine they believe there'll be enough support in PR for them to be competitive, once Trump is out of the headlines.
If so, so be it. Hell, if any American wants to vote Republican, I would fully protect their rights do so.

I remember back in the 80's when I went to PR on business they were voting on a statehood referendum, but I don't think it passed.

I would expect a candidate would have to vote to request statehood, and then it takes congressional/potus approval.

Has DC held a referendum vote?

I think there's an issue cause Puerto Ricans don't have to pay income tax, but would understatehood. But they've always voted narrowly in favor.
