We asked a professional soprano to appraise Lady Gaga's national anthem at the Biden inauguration

An expert soprano reacts

British soprano, Baroque specialist and much-loved broadcaster Catherine Bott shared her thoughts with us. “Well, as always, Lady Gaga made the occasion her own – starting with the gold microphone, accessorised by a massive gold brooch, pinned on what looked rather like the top half of a wetsuit, with a vast crimson skirt,” Bott begins.

“And her confident smile was reassuring as she sang: in the key of G flat major and staying in the no-mans-land of the contralto/mezzo-soprano registers, she began with appropriate classical dignity and 4 beats in the bar, just a hint of funky cross-rhythms in her phrasing of the words ‘Proudly we hailed’.

“Then into waltz time for the second half of the anthem, with a daring – and clearly deliberate – 5-beats-in-the-bar here and there. Perhaps the most poignant moment, after last week’s disturbances in the building behind her, came as her voice rose through the words ‘that our flag WAS STILL THERE’, and held – and held – that last note.

“Then, Lady Gaga gave us a final reminder of her mastery of pop style as she sailed aloft to celebrate ‘The Land of the Free and The Home of the Brave’ with some Mariah Carey-esque melismas. Carey could have reached some higher notes, but Gaga put her own unique heart and soul into what an American commentator immediately declared to be ‘a great rendition of our National Anthem’.

“Later on, mask in place, she could be seen joining in the communal singing of ‘Amazing Grace’. She was the right choice for today.”

I often wish our anthem was strictly instrumental. I am not a fan of the words, and it is notoriously difficult to sing well. I liked what she did with it.

I normally hate the song and even the music to be honest. Always the same dreary, plodding melody. Even worse when some singers try to jazz it up with lots of extra notes. But Gaga's rendition and phrasing made me think of how someone might have said it at the original event/battle. With excitement--'Look, the flag is still flying!' and pride. Just my opinion, but it actually made me teary. And of course her voice is amazing and strong through the parts where many singers fade.

side note--I wish we had an anthem that was more about the country instead of a battle that could be about any nation in the world. Like 'America' but with out the god part--it at least describes the natural beauty of the country.

As a 68 yo white guy, I have heard hundreds of singers sing this song. With the exception of Whitney Houston at the NFL Super Bowl after the September 11, 2001 attack, this is the best rises to that level. I especially enjoyed her turning and looking back at the Capitol Building during part of the song.

of the poster(s) who said she sang it so my ears didn't hurt--one of the few who has ever been able to do that

She was totally fabulous, from the voice to the song interpretation to the dress.

However, I had one thought about the dress. I wonder if she chose it so it would look fabulous from drone photographs. We will know when the drone photos come out.

For any singer, this is a peak career moment and she would stand out great in that dress from a photo taken from above.

I admit I was a little nervous for a second when she made her way down the steps. That would be tough, trying to gracefully get down the steps in that dress. Thank Dog she had the escort.

And not the piano when listening to the classics.

Styles and taste change. And while I generally prefer a traditional National Anthem, I felt the changes she made were specifically styled for the threat our Democracy faced.

When she belted out “our flag was still there’ she did slow down the song. But consider she turned he back to the audience and pointed at the flag on the Capitol which was attacked 2 weeks ago in an attempt to overturn our democracy. I thought that was powerful.

Who made her costume? Ballooned skirt, 1810 political cartoon style, pink - blend of red and white, much like the less dense reds of the Federalist period. (No actual Republican red in her Lady Liberty this day!) Blue, gold eagle, gold hair of course, black interwoven braids, black gloves. A caricature of the last time our Capitol was ransacked, the War of 1812. And the singing. Deeply respectful beginning, rousing descriptive lyrics, climax and peak in tone when the "flag was still there!", and it still is there despite the insurrection, and a bold, defiant ending that defines who Americans are and how they feel at this time.

You move people's emotions with symbolism. This was well orchestrated, and I thought it stole the show.

Did you see Mitch's eyeballs when VP Harris was speaking? A total displeased stare from what I saw.
