The sixth attempt to recall California Gov. Gavin Newsom is rapidly gaining steam amid the worsening pandemic, a controversial new stay-at-home order and an unemployment fraud scandal.
It was previously reported by Politico's Carla Marinucci that those close to the governor were growing "increasingly worried" about the recall efforts, and Marinucci's latest report on the recall adds another twist.
After detailing the new Republican fundraising efforts behind the recall while noting the challenges the GOP will face in a heavily Democratic state Marinucci quotes a "Sacramento insider aligned with a major special interest group" who says, "Weve gotten calls from Democrats who are already kicking the tires" on getting on the ballot in a potential recall election in 2021.
Here's why that development is significant: If a recall election is held, the first item on the ballot would be a simple "yes" or "no" vote on whether Newsom should be recalled. The second item would be a vote on Newsom's replacement, which would be negated if "no" receives more votes than "yes."
However, if "yes" wins, Newsom would automatically be disqualified from office and his successor would be chosen from one of the candidates on the ballot. That's what happened in 2003 when 55% of Californians voted to recall Democratic Gov. Gray Davis, and Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante was the main Democratic candidate at the bottom of the ballot.
Put another way: The recall effort provides an opportunity for Democrats to replace Newsom while avoiding a Republican governor. San Diego Republican Mayor Kevin Faulconer, a moderate who just termed out of office last week, is almost certainly going to run for governor in 2022, and would likely advance to the general election vs. Newsom after getting through the state's jungle primary.

I think this sets a horrendous precedent if successful, though.

(35,140 posts)When I went to early vote for city council runoff,
there was a recall Adler table in the parking lot.
I was going to sign it, but the people there were
not masked and there was no sanitizer, so I didn't.
Still.. I really hate double standards.

(9,707 posts)which totally screwed over people like writers, musicians, artists, photographers, community theaters, actors, music venues, etc. I know a lot of normally progressive people whose livelihoods have been ruined by either the AB 5 rules that try to force everyone to be an employee even if you want to be an independent contractor, as well as the many small businesses that object to the shutdowns during COVID-19.
I think there's a good chance that a recall could succeed, and only hope another Dem can win instead of Faulconer.

(10,966 posts)Do politicians just not think at all? They know people are miserable staying at home, and they wag their finger right before going to live it up? London Breed did similar.
Hubris doesn't begin to describe it.
I don't know anyone now who isn't salivating to see him gone. I'm not sure I've ever seen someone so stupidly and obviously impolite his political future for something so completely unnecessary.

Holy Fuck??!!
I was there in CA when they pulled this shit and we ended up with Arnold "Fucking" Schwarzenegger! This was barely a bar below Donnie Dipshit, and barely a bar above Jesse "the body" Ventura.
I fucking believe in my soul that there's a direct fucking straight line from Arnold Schwarzenegger to Donnie Shit for Brains.
Has Newsome been perfect? Fuck No!
Has Newsome made mistakes? Fuck Yes!
But HOLY FUCK! Why do Democrats continue to eat their own?
There is only ONE reason to recall Newsome. It would be to help California Retrumplicans. That's it! That's their gameplan.
Democrats think; " oh, we'll just get a better Democrat in office..no big deal".
Retrumplicans think; "holy fuck, I can't believe they're falling for this shit again".
Retrumplicans woudn't give a shit if Newsome hired his own fucking chidren, hired his inept son in law to run CALCARE, or put a corrupt dipshit in charge of mail delivery. THE ONLY THING THEY CARE ABOUT IS THAT HE'S A DEMOCRAT!
My God. This would be like letting Vladimir Putin choose our Presid...oh, fuck it, never mind

(7,880 posts)We all know Issa weaseled his way into a seat this term. I wouldn't be surprised if he's a major player in this. This is what he does. Machiavellian power-grabber. People worked so hard to successfully beat him in his old district -- so he goes and runs in a red district and wins.
Schwarzenegger ran CA into the ground. Thank gawd for Jerry Brown who had to do cleanup on aisles 1-1000.
We need Newsom to stay right where he is.

This latest round is crashing and burning. Hell I drove by a Recall Newsom booth last week and not a single person registered. It's all noise and no plan.
